Skuodas (German Schoden , outdated: Johannesberg ) is a town and seat of the Rajongemeinde of the same name in the southern Curonian landscape of Ceclis (lit.Keklys) in northern Lithuania , in the Lower Lithuania region , just 2 km south of the border with Latvia . In 2006 7,508 people lived here. Skuodas is located on the Bartuva river south of the confluence with the Luoba . The Riga - Klaipėda railway line , which opened in 1914, runs west of the city .
history
Skuodas was first mentioned in a document in 1253 as Scoden , Sckoden . In 1259 the battle of Skuodas between Žemaiten and the Livonian order took place here. In 1572 Skuodas received city rights.
On an area at today's S. Nėries gatvė is the former Jewish cemetery with a memorial stone and very few gravestones set in concrete to form a Star of David .
