Algirdas Gediminas Šemeta (born April 23, 1962 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian politician and economist . From 2010 to 2014 he was EU Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud in the Barroso II Commission .

education

Algirdas Šemeta studied from 1980 to June 1985 at the Faculty of Economic Cybernetics and Finance at Vilnius University . There he received the diploma of economist and mathematician. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a research assistant and economist at the Lithuanian Economic Institute ( Lietuvos ekonomikos institutas ).

Career

From 1990 to 1991, Šemeta headed the subdivision of the Economic Development Department at the Ministry of Economy of Lithuania . From 1991 to 1992 he was an advisor and deputy director of the Department of the Government Chancellery of Lithuania . From December 1992 to 1996, Šemeta headed the Securities Commission at the Ministry of Finance (Lithuania) ( Vertybinių popierių komisija prie Finansų ministerijos , VPK).

From June 1996 to February 1997 he was chairman of VPK, from February 1997 to June 1999 he was Lithuania's finance minister . Then from June to November 1999 he was Vice President of AB “Nalšia”. From December 1999 to September 2001 he was government secretary in the government chancellery, from September 2001 to December 2008 he headed the Statistical Office ( Statistikos departamentas prie Lietuvos Respublikos Vyriausybės ), from December 9, 2008 to July 2009 he was Minister of Finance of Lithuania. From July 2009 to February 2010 he was EU Commissioner for Financial Planning and Budget . In the follow-up commission, he took on the tax and customs union, audit and fraud prevention department.
