Connie Hedegaard (born September 15, 1960 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish journalist and politician for the Conservative People's Party . From 2010 to 2014 she was the EU Commissioner for Climate Protection in the Barroso II Commission .

Life

Hedegaard studied literature and history. She was a member of the Danish Parliament from 1984 to 1990 and again from 2005 to 2010. In the meantime, she worked as a journalist. In 2004 she was unexpectedly appointed Environment Minister in the cabinet of Anders Fogh Rasmussen and held this office until 2007. Then she moved to the climate and energy department until she was appointed Special Minister for the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on November 24, 2009 . She chaired the first phase of the session before Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen presided over the final negotiations.

Shortly before the conference, Hedegaard was nominated as EU climate protection commissioner in the Barroso II Commission . She took office on February 10, 2010. She is no longer a member of the Juncker Commission , which will be in office from November 2014 .

Since January 1, 2015, Connie Hedegaard has been chairwoman of the international environmental foundation KR Foundation , which was established by the Danish Villum Fund and the Kann Rasmussen family of entrepreneurs ( Velux ).
