Political career

From 1994 to 1999 she was a member of the European Parliament . Kjer Hansen was Minister of Social Affairs from August 2, 2004 to September 12, 2007 under Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen . From September 12, 2007 to February 23, 2010 she headed the Ministry of Agriculture, most recently in Lars Løkke Rasmussen's cabinet .

The Minister of Social Affairs caused a political stir in September 2005 when, in an interview with Jyllands-Posten, she argued that social inequality in Denmark is not a problem, but on the contrary is a prerequisite for social dynamism. In doing so, she stepped into strong contrast with the consensus in Danish society and with the official line of her government and party leaders, but she also received support from bourgeois circles and parts of her own parliamentary group. After Fogh threatened Rasmussen with her dismissal, she again distanced herself from her statements.

Since June 28, 2015, she has been responsible for agriculture again as Minister for Environment and Food in the Lars Løkke Rasmussen II government. On February 27, 2016, she resigned after being accused of submitting incorrect figures on the possible environmental impact of the project as part of a legislative initiative in favor of agriculture. She anticipated such a vote of no confidence .
