Lea Wermelin

Lea Wermelin (born May 10, 1985 in Rønne ) is a Danish politician of the Social Democrats and current environment minister .

Life

Wermelin's grandmother emigrated from Sweden to Bornholm at the age of thirteen in 1932 to work as a maid on the island. Wermelin was born on the island and grew up there. In 2004 she graduated from the Bornholms Gymnasium. From 2005 to 2011 she studied at the University of Copenhagen and graduated from cand.scient.pol. From 2008 to 2010 she was a student assistant in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In 2009 she spent a semester abroad at Lund University .

On May 9, 2014, Wermelin stood up as the top candidate for the Folketing in Bornholms Storkreds and was elected to Parliament in the 2015 Folketing election with 18.4 percent of the vote. On June 27, 2019, she was appointed Environment Minister in the Frederiksen cabinet by Margrethe II .
