Karen Ellemann Kloch (born August 26, 1969 in Charlottenlund , Hovedstaden region ) is a Danish politician of the Venstre party . She was Minister for the Interior and Social Affairs, Environment and Equality, Nordic Affairs and Fisheries.

Life

Journalist, teacher and member of parliament

Karen Ellemann, daughter of the long-time chairman of the Venstre and Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen and granddaughter of the journalist and long-time MP Jens Peter Jensen , first worked as a journalist after attending the Holte Gymnasium and worked as a consultant for The Voice from 1990 to 1993 and subsequently as a manager at Scandinavian Models . After being head of administration at Brinkmann Kommunikation between 1995 and 1996 , she became a manager at Dagmar Teatret and then worked as a freelance journalist between 1999 and 2002. She then completed a teaching degree at the N. Zahles Seminarium between 2002 and 2004 and then worked as a teacher at Rungsted Skole until 2007 .

She began her political career in local politics when she became a member of the local council of the Rudersdal municipality in 2007 . In the elections on November 13, 2007 , she was elected for the first time as a member of the Brøndby constituency in the Folketing and has since represented the interests of Venstre. At the same time, she became the Venstre's spokesperson for family, immigration and integration policy. Minister

On April 7, 2009, Karen Ellemann was appointed Minister-President Lars Løkke Rasmussen as Minister of the Interior and Social Affairs in his government .

As part of an extensive government reshuffle, she took over the office of Environment Minister from Troels Lund Poulsen on February 23, 2010 and at the same time succeeded Bertel Haarder as Minister for Nordic Cooperation. She held both ministerial offices until the end of Lars Løkke Rasmussen's term of office on October 3, 2011.

As Minister of the Environment, she made a controversial decision on the intended import of 6,000 tons of the highly toxic chemical hexachlorobenzene (HCB) , which causes diseases, from Australia , justifying the import by stating that the specialist knowledge available in Denmark would ensure proper processing. Critics, however, pointed out the possible consequences of an accident during the sea transport. Due to the public protests, she postponed the ship transport to Denmark on December 2, 2010 for an indefinite period.

In 2010 it approved the construction of the Østerild wind turbine test field . The decision was controversial because parts of a protective plantation (Østerild Klitplantage) had to be cleared and there was fear of damage to the Vejlerne bird sanctuary .

In 2011 she became spokeswoman for the Venstre parliamentary group for elementary and high schools .
