The 2007 Folketing election on November 13, 2007 was the 66th election to the Danish Parliament ( Folketing ).

Around four million voters were called to vote. It took place in Denmark and the autonomous regions of the Faroe Islands and Greenland , which each send two MEPs to Christiansborg . In Denmark itself 175 MPs are elected, so that the Folketing consists of 179 MPs. A threshold of 2% applies .

The winner for the third time in a row was the incumbent Anders Fogh Rasmussen . This makes him the first Venstre Prime Minister to be re-elected for the second time. The existing coalition with the conservatives, with the tolerance of the Danish People's Party , could be continued.

Starting position

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen called new elections on October 24, 2007 in order to renew the political mandate of his government for the upcoming budget negotiations. Venstre, conservatives and right-wing populists formed the bourgeois bloc during the election campaign, while the left-wing camp consisted of social democrats , left-wing liberals , the Socialist People's Party and the red-green unity list . It supported the candidacy of the social democrat Helle Thorning-Schmidt for the top political office.

Since both blocs started the election campaign at about the same rate, the founding of the New Alliance party was considered to tip the scales . The New Alliance was founded around the former left-wing liberal MP Naser Khader . It was only shortly before election day that he was persuaded to give conditional support to the incumbent Fogh Rasmussen.

Results

While the Socialists more than doubled their mandates, both Venstre and Social Democrats suffered losses. The left-wing liberals lost heavily after an excellent result in 2005, partly to the New Alliance , which was able to win five seats. Right-wing populists and conservatives could easily gain votes. The bourgeois bloc had a total of 89 seats, which, with the support of a bourgeois MP from the Faroe Islands, meant the absolute majority required.

The Faroese elected Høgni Hoydal (Tjóðveldi) a supporter of the left and Edmund Joensen (Sambandsflokkurin) a middle-class MP. The two Greenland MPs Juliane Henningsen (IA) and Lars Emil Johansen (Siumut) are assigned to the left-wing camp.
