Naser Khader

Naser Khader ( Arabic ناصر خضر, DMG Nāṣir Ḫaḍir ; * July 1, 1963 in Damascus , Syria ) is a Danish politician of the Conservative People's Party . Until 2011 he was a member of the Folketing and most recently the foreign and integration policy spokesman for his group.

Before that, Khader was a member of the left-liberal radical Venstre from 1984 to 2007 . From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the liberal-conservative Ny Alliance (renamed Liberal Alliance ). In 2009 he switched to the Conservatives.

Migration and integration

Naser Khader was born as the eldest of five children of the Palestinian Ahmad Abu Khader (1930-1998) and his Syrian wife Sada (* 1944). He traditionally grew up in the village of Barseh 15 kilometers outside Damascus. As an immigrant, his father struggled to find work in Syria, and although they lived in his wife's village, she was referred to as "the one who married a stranger". The father therefore went to Germany as a guest worker in 1969 and shortly afterwards to Denmark. The mother followed with the five children in 1974 and found that her husband had a Danish friend and two children with her. The mother was illiterate and didn't speak a word of Danish. She moved in with her husband with her five children and from then on the whole family lived in Copenhagen. The children grew up in modest prosperity and above all with a good education. They were quickly integrated and had Danish friends. Naser Khader and his siblings only found out about their two Danish sisters as young adults. In the 1980s, the parents opened a vegetable store with a video library in Copenhagen- Nørrebro .

Khader attended Rysensteen Gymnasium , studied political science at the University of Copenhagen from 1986 to 1993 and then Middle East studies at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense (1993), rhetoric at Aarhus University (1994/95) and Islamic studies at al-Azhar University in Cairo (1997).

From 1983 to 1998 Khader worked as a translator and interpreter for Arabic and from 1989 to 1997 as a consultant for Danmarks Radio (DR). From 1998 to 2001 he was a member of the Danish Ethics Council and from 2000 to 2001 a member of an expert commission for integration for the Ministry of the Interior. From 2004 to 2008 Khader was UNICEF ambassador.

Naser Khader lives with the Danish lawyer and author Bente Dalsbæk. They each have one child from a previous relationship. They also have a son together.

Politician

From 1984 to May 2007 Naser Khader was a member of the social-liberal party Radical Venstre , 1997-2000 member of the Copenhagen City Council, then since 2001 in the Folketing.

On May 7, 2007, Naser Khader announced that he would leave the Radical Venstre in order to found a new party together with MEPs Anders Samuelsen and Gitte Seeberg . This Ny Alliance (New Alliance) elected him its founding chairman. She won five mandates in the 2007 Folketing election , but contrary to original hopes, she was unable to influence the formation of a government. On January 5, 2009, Khader resigned after persistent criticism of his strategic capabilities. In fact, Khader's political profile did not go well with the party's liberal market orientation that Samuelsen was aiming for.

Khader switched to the faction of the Conservative People's Party. On August 14, 2009 he was appointed the Conservatives' foreign policy and integration policy spokesman. In 2011 he missed re-entry into parliament.

Islam and Democracy

Khader became internationally known during the cartoon dispute that rocked Denmark in 2006. Because of his moderate demeanor, he received threats from Islamists, culminating in the scandal surrounding the indirect death threats from Imam Ahmed Akkari . In front of a hidden camera, he could "jokingly" imagine that Khader would be the victim of an assassination attempt if he were promoted to Minister of Integration. Akkari was speaking of a joke, but could no longer maintain himself as a spokesman in his community.

Naser Khader promotes the connection between democracy and Islam (" Euro- Islam ") and founded the group Democratic Muslims in Denmark during the cartoon dispute . Their so-called Ten Commandments of Democracy are:

  1. We must all separate politics and religion , and we must not put religion above the law in a democracy.
  2. We have to respect that all people have equal rights regarding their gender, their origin, their sexual orientation or their religious beliefs.
  3. Nobody should stir up hatred, and we should never allow hatred to enter our hearts.
  4. No one should ever use or encourage violence - no matter how frustrated or hurt we feel, or how fair our cause may be.
  5. We must all use the path of dialogue - always.
  6. We must all respect the freedom of expression, including the freedom of those with whom we disagree.
  7. Nobody can claim a special place for himself or for others, neither as superior, as inferior, nor as eternal sacrifice.
  8. We must treat the national and religious symbols of others the way we would like them to be - burning flags and graffiti on churches, mosques and synagogues are insults that prevent dialogue and promote the oppression of others.
  9. We have to pay attention to our manners and manners in public. The public space is not a stage on which we let off our aggressions or spread hatred and fear, but should be a forum for visions and arguments, from which the best can gain support.
  10. We all have to stand up for our opponents if they are treated hatefully.
