The Syddansk Universitet ( German South Danish University ; English University of Southern Denmark , abbreviation SDU ) is the third largest university in Denmark . It emerged in 1998 from the union of Odense Universitet , Handelshøjskole Syd / Ingeniørhøjskole Syd and the Sydjysk Universitetscenter .
Campus and Faculties
There are campuses in Odense , Slagelse , Esbjerg , Kolding and Sønderborg , as well as an institute in Copenhagen with a total of 31,299 students (as of 2015). The university has
- a humanities ,
- an economic and social science ,
- a medical ,
- a scientific and
- an engineering faculty .
Odense campus
The building complex in the south of the city of Odense is the real nucleus of the South Danish University. The Odense Universitet was established in 1966 as the third comprehensive university in Denmark. All five faculties are represented here, including the Center for Journalism . With the exception of the technical department, all faculties are housed in a single large-area building that has been continually expanded. The rusted facade of the sober functional building is characteristic and architecturally wanted.
Odense Library
In order to build a library, the Herlufsholm boarding school near Næstved bought the large and famous library of over 40,000 volumes in 1968, the basis of which had been laid in 1565 by the humanist and Danish sea hero Admiral Herluf Trolle .
Sønderborg campus
The campus in Sønderborg was initially on Grundtvigs Allé and was used as a primary school until the early 1990s, so most of the rooms were quite small.
Since the winter semester 2007, the university has been located in Alsion , a new building complex on the west bank of the Als Sund . The Institute for Grænseregionsforskning , which was independent until 2003 and has since been affiliated to the university, moved to Alsion in January 2007 after having been based in Aabenraa for 30 years . Mads Clausen ( Danfoss ) has its own research institute at the university (Mads Clausen Institute) and supports it financially with a fund.
There are two works of art by Olafur Eliasson in the Alsion .
Slagelse campus
The Institute for Management and Corporate Strategy and the Institute for Language and Communication offer a range of training courses with direct reference to business life. The campus with 2100 students in Slagelse is located in a building directly at the city's train station and is therefore excellently connected to the public transport network. This enables commuters from Zealand to study outside the Copenhagen metropolitan area.
Esbjerg campus
The campus in Esbjerg, not far from the city center, has around 1000 students and houses important areas of the engineering faculty with courses and a. in mechatronics, electronics, chemical engineering, robotics, product development and production / manufacturing management, some of which are offered in English.
Kolding campus
The centrally located Kolding campus building near the port was planned by Henning Larsen Architects using a triangular floor plan and completed in 2014. With this building, the office won the International Architecture Award 2015 and other prizes. The subjects of business administration, computer science, tourism and design are offered, some also in English. 2,600 students are currently enrolled here.
Cooperation with the University of Flensburg
Since 1991 there has been a close cooperation between the SDU and the University of Flensburg , where the South Danish University has an office. This cooperation emerged from the cooperation with the International Institute for Management at the University of Flensburg and primarily concerns the Bachelor and Master programs in International Management and Management Studies at the Flensburg location, which can be completed with a Danish-German double degree. In addition, the universities cooperate on the BaSK (culture and language mediator) and English-language European studies, the latter with the bachelor's degree in Sønderborg and the master's degree in Flensburg.
