Disasters

  • 1502: 20 ships sink in a hurricane over the Spanish Caribbean island of Hispaniola . Everyone on board is killed.
  • 1867: 101 miners die when the shaft collapses in the Neue Fundgrube hard coal mine in Lugau .
  • 1942: When the Japanese passenger and cargo ship Montevideo Maru was sunk by an American submarine, mostly Australian prisoners of war and civilian internees died in 1053.
  • 2002: In the Überlingen mid-air collision , a Russian passenger jet type encounter Tupolev Tu-154 and a cargo plane of DHL of the type Boeing 757 in 11,000 meters above Lake Constance at Überlingen together and crash. There are 71 dead. An error by the responsible Swiss air surveillance system, Skyguide, is stated to be the cause . It is the worst airplane accident over Germany in recent times.
