Michael Berrer (born July 1, 1980 in Stuttgart ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

Michael Berrer started playing tennis at the age of 7. In 1999 he started his professional career. He plays for TV Reutlingen. His first individual victory in a Grand Slam tournament was in Wimbledon against Albert Montañés 6: 3, 6: 3 and 6: 2. At the BMW Open 2008 in Munich, he and Rainer Schüttler won the doubles competition and thus his first title on the ATP tour.

In February 2009 he won the Challenger of Breslau 6: 3 and 6: 4 against Alexander Kudrjawzew .

In February 2010 Berrer reached the tournament in Zagreb for the first time in his career an ATP final in singles. There he was defeated by the Croatian defending champion Marin Čilić in three sets with 4: 6, 7: 6 5 and 3: 6. He also won the Challenger in Heilbronn with a double-set win against Andrei Golubew . At the ATP World Tour 500 event in Dubai, he played his way to the quarter-finals after winning over Lukáš Lacko and Nikolai Dawydenko . There he was defeated by Marcos Baghdatis 6: 7, 1: 6. He also reached the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters - there he failed to Rafael Nadal with 0: 6, 1: 6. In September Berrer qualified as number 51 in the world for the China Open in Beijing. In round one of the main field he defeated the world number 7, Tomáš Berdych , in three sets. This was the second win against a top ten player in his career. In lap two he had to admit defeat to Gilles Simon after another three set match. The match lasted 3:06 hours and ended 7: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 from Berrer's point of view. On the way to the semi-finals in Vienna, Berrer defeated Guillermo García-López , Pablo Cuevas and Marcos Baghdatis. But then he failed in three sets against the lucky loser Andreas Haider-Maurer .

At the beginning of 2011 Berrer was able to reach the final in Zagreb again. As in the previous year, he failed again, this time with 3: 6 and 4: 6 to Ivan Dodig . At the French Open , Berrer played for the first time in his career in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. There he lost in three sets against Andy Murray .

In the last game of his career against Maximilian Marterer , he secured the title of German champion for the first time.
