Men's singles at the Australian Open 2012 .

With the defending champion Novak Đoković as well as Rafael Nadal , Roger Federer and Andy Murray , the four top seeded players reached the semifinals , as they did at the last US Open and the French Open . This constellation last occurred at the Australian Open in 2005 . While Nadal won against Federer in four sets in the first semi-final and thus reached the final for the second time after winning the title in 2009 , the second semi-final between Đoković and Murray went the full distance. After four and a half hours of play, Đoković narrowly prevailed; For him it was the third finals in Melbourne after his titles in 2008 and 2011 .

The final marked a new record for the tournament with a playing time of five hours and 53 minutes; the previous record of 5 hours and 14 minutes had been set by Nadal and Fernando Verdasco three years earlier in the semifinals. It was also the longest Grand Slam final of all time; it exceeded the previous record set by Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl at the US Open in 1988 by almost an hour. The total playing time also includes a short break that arose when the roof of the Rod Laver Arena had to be closed in the fourth movement due to the onset of rain. With 7: 5 in the fifth set, Đoković finally prevailed, winning his third Australian Open title and his fifth Grand Slam title overall. Nadal, on the other hand, lost a Grand Slam final for the third time in a row, a series that had never happened before.

The biggest surprise of the tournament was the Japanese Kei Nishikori , who reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career and on the way defeated, among others, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , who was considered a secret favorite after his title at the preparatory tournament in Doha . The two Australians Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic also attracted attention . The former world number one Hewitt, meanwhile slipped to number 181 in the world rankings and only due to a wildcard in the main field, reached the last sixteen by winning over seeded players Andy Roddick and Milos Raonic , in which he won a set against Novak Đoković. The 19-year-old Tomic also defeated two seeded players, Fernando Verdasco and Oleksandr Dolhopolow , while he made up a 2-0 set deficit against Verdasco. In the round of 16 against Roger Federer, however, he had no chance.

There was a minor scandal at the round of 16 match between Tomáš Berdych and Nicolás Almagro . After Berdych had won the match in four tight sets, he refused his opponent the usual handshake on the net. He insinuated that Almagro had deliberately shot him in the shoulder beforehand. The audience had no understanding for this and booed Berdych for several minutes during the subsequent interview.

The qualification took place from January 11th to 14th. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
