Radek Štěpánek (born November 27, 1978 in Karviná , then Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech tennis player .
Career
Štěpánek started playing tennis at the age of three and turned professional in 1996. He prefers the hard court, he won all of his five individual titles on this surface.
In 2003 Štěpánek was listed in the top 50 for the first time. In 2004 he reached the final of the Masters tournament in Paris . In 2005 he was the Czech number 1 for the first time. In 2006 he won his first ATP tournament in singles in Rotterdam . He also reached the final of the Masters tournament in Hamburg , the third round of the French Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon . On July 10, 2006, he was number eight in the world, his best place in the world rankings . In 2007 Štěpánek won the Los Angeles tournament ; in the final he defeated the American James Blake 7: 6, 5: 7 and 6: 2. At the Masters tournament in Montreal he reached the semi-finals and was defeated there by world number one Roger Federer 6: 7 and 2: 6. In 2009 he won the first tournament since 1992 in Brisbane (he defeated Fernando Verdasco 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4) and the SAP Open in San José . In 2011 he won the Washington DC tournament .
Štěpánek had developed into a successful doubles player over the course of his career; his greatest successes were winning the Australian Open 2012 and the US Open 2013 , each with Leander Paes . In total, he was able to win 18 double titles, his best ranking position was fourth, which he reached on November 12, 2012. He ended his career on November 14, 2017.
Between 2017 and 2018 he worked with Novak Đoković . He then moved to the coaching team of Grigor Dimitrov .
Davis Cup
2003 Štěpánek made his debut for the Czech Davis Cup team . In the 2009 season he reached the final with her, in which she was clearly defeated 0-5 in Barcelona Spain . In 2012 the team qualified for the final for the second time, this time in Prague . Again the opponent was Spain, who were defeated 3-2. Štěpánek competed against Italy , Serbia and Argentina in all season matches . In the final, he and Tomáš Berdych won the doubles game against reigning world champions Marc López and Marcel Granollers , after Štěpánek had lost his first single to David Ferrer . Since Berdych won his opening game against Nicolás Almagro and lost his second individual against Ferrer, the fifth individual decided between Štěpánek and Almagro. Štěpánek won the game 3-1, with which the Czech Republic had won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1980 (then still as Czechoslovakia). In the following season , the Czech team was able to defend the title; in the final she defeated Serbia 3: 2, Štěpánek won the decisive individual against Dušan Lajović with 6: 3, 6: 1 and 6: 1.
Private
Štěpánek was engaged to the tennis player Martina Hingis , the couple separated in August 2007. He was married to the tennis player Nicole Vaidišová from July 2010 to June 2013. Until April 2014, he dated the Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová for a few months. In May 2018, Štěpánek and Vaidišová, who had been in love again since 2016, remarried.
Czech football goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek is his cousin.
