Nenad Zimonjić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ненад Зимоњић ; born June 4, 1976 in Belgrade , then SR Serbia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian tennis player . He is particularly successful in doubles and mixed games.

Career

Zimonjić has been a professional player since 1995. On November 17, 2008 he was at the top of the ATP world rankings in doubles for the first time , his best position in singles was place 176 (March 29, 1999).

At the ATP tournament in St. Pölten , a preparatory tournament for the French Open , he caused a sensation in May 2004 when he reached the main field of the tournament via qualification and was number six in the world as number 339 in the world rankings in the first round, Andre Agassi , 6-2, 7-6 6 defeated. Experts reckoned with Agassis 800 in this match. Individual victory, which, however, had to pause for almost two months due to an injury break. Zimonjić managed another surprise in June 2005 at the lawn tournament in Halle . In the first round he defeated Nicolas Kiefer as a qualifier 6: 7 1 , 6: 3, 6: 4.

But his strength lies in the doubles, where he celebrated his greatest successes. He won a total of 53 tournaments, in a further 36 tournaments he was in the finals. He won his first title in Delray Beach in 1999 together with Max Mirny . In the following years he played with various partners and continuously worked his way up the double world rankings.

Julian Knowle was his permanent partner from October 2003 to 2004 . During the 2005 season Zimonjić then played alongside Leander Paes and from the beginning of 2006 to June 2007 he formed a team with Fabrice Santoro . After separating from Santoro, Zimonjić teamed up with Daniel Nestor , who had been denied further success at the side of Mark Knowles . Zimonjić said he had waited several years for a world-class doubles player to become available. The irony of the story: When the Canadian and the Serb decided to work together after the 2007 Wimbledon tournament, Knowles / Nestor surprisingly won the French Open .

At the side of Novak Đoković , Zimonjić defeated the Australian pairing Paul Hanley and Lleyton Hewitt in the Davis Cup 2008 in Belgrade in front of 20,000 spectators in the sold-out Beogradska Arena . They secured the team's promotion to the world group. Until then, there had only been more viewers at a Davis Cup game at one final.

2008 was Zimonjićs most successful season, in which he won five tournaments with Nestor. In addition to two wins at Masters tournaments at Rothenbaum in Hamburg and in Toronto , the two Belgrade-borns won their first joint Grand Slam title. While Zimonjić celebrated his first Grand Slam title in doubles at Wimbledon , Nestor completed his career Grand Slam in doubles with this victory. With his long-term partner Mark Knowles, Nestor had previously won the double competitions at the French Open, the Australian Open and the US Open. He had already won his third Grand Slam mixed title at the Australian Open. Before the Wimbledon tournament, Nestor and Zimonjić also played their way into the final at the French Open , but surprisingly lost 2: 6 and 3: 6 to the unseeded Pablo Cuevas and Luis Horna in the final . At the Masters Cup in Shanghai they survived the preliminary round without defeat and defeated the Bryan twins Bob and Mike 7: 6 3 , 6: 2 in the final . Since the American brothers and sisters had lost a match in the preliminary round, Nestor and Zimonjić overtook them in the season's final sprint and ended the year number 1 in the team ranking.

In early 2009, Zimonjić reached the finals in Doha and Sydney with his partner , but they did not win the tournaments. At the Australian Open , the second round was over. The first tournament victory of the year followed in Rotterdam . In April she won the Masters in Monte Carlo , Barcelona and the Masters in Rome . Zimonjić and his partner also won the Masters in Madrid . At the French Open they reached the semifinals. In Wimbledon , Zimonjić defended his double title.

At the French Open 2010 , Zimonjić won both the men's doubles (with Nestor) and the mixed (with Katarina Srebotnik ). At the end of 2010 he won the ATP World Tour Finals in London with Nestor . This was his last tournament with the Canadian. His new doubles partner was Michaël Llodra from the 2011 season , with whom he won four tournaments during the season and stood in four other finals. At the beginning of 2012 there was another title as well as a final appearance before he and Llodra parted again. With changing partners, he closed the season with two more titles and another finals. He started the 2013 season with Robert Lindstedt , but played alongside Julien Benneteau from the middle of the season . With Lindstedt he won one, with Benneteau two titles. For the 2014 season Zimonjić and Daniel Nestor formed a team again and they won the title three times in five finals, two of them in a Masters tournament. He also won the mixed competition at Wimbledon with Samantha Stosur .

Zimonjic has played for the Serbian Davis Cup team since 1995 , which won the Davis Cup in 2010. In the early years he was part of a Yugoslav Davis Cup team before the Serbian one was introduced in 1995.
