The Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place from May 8th to 17th, 2009 in Madrid . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on a clay court. This season it was the fourth of nine tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category .

Defending champion in the singles was Andy Murray , who failed in the quarterfinals this year. This year the two top seeded players Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer reached the final. The Swiss clearly prevailed in two sets 6: 4 and 6: 4 and thus secured the second title in Madrid after winning the final against Fernando González in 2006 . For Federer this was already the 15th Masters title in his career and his 58th tournament victory overall on the ATP World Tour . In doubles, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski were the defending champions, but this year they were eliminated in the second round. This year's winners were Daniel Nestor , who won in Madrid for the fourth time, and his partner Nenad Zimonjić . In the final they defeated Simon Aspelin and Wesley Moodie in straight sets 6: 4 and 6: 4.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the double competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,835,000 euros; the total financial liabilities were EUR 3,700,000.
