Life

Andy Murray (right) together with his brother Jamie (2011)

Andy Murray grew up in Dunblane , Scotland with his one year older brother James ("Jamie") on. His parents separated when he was a child. Murray attended the local elementary school where he witnessed a school massacre in March 1996 in which a 43-year-old man shot and killed 16 first graders and a teacher. It took him several years, says Murray, to process the event.

Murray was introduced to tennis at the age of three. His mother Judy, daughter of the Scottish professional footballer Roy Erskine ( Hibernian ) and later team leader of the British Fed Cup team, was herself a tennis coach for the Scottish Association and initially accompanied her son's career. Murray also played soccer until he was eleven. Later, the parents opened up training opportunities for the budding professional tennis player in Spain. His brother Jamie also became a professional tennis player, but this primarily appeared as a doubles player. The two brothers often played doubles together and have won two titles so far.

In 2008 he published his autobiography under the title Hitting Back (Eng .: "strike back").

Murray has been married to Kim Sears, the daughter of English tennis coach Nigel Sears , since April 11, 2015 . Both have been close friends since they were young and live together on an estate in Surrey .

In 2013, Murray was named Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to tennis . In 2017, Murray was raised to the nobility as a Knight Bachelor for his services to tennis .

While he failed in Monte Carlo in three sets at the eventual tournament winner Nadal, Murray was only two points away from a triumph over Đoković in Rome, which would have meant his first defeat of the season. Ultimately, the eventual tournament winner Đoković won the match in the tie-break of the third set. At the ATP World Tour Finals , he gave up due to an adductor injury during the group stage after losing his first match to David Ferrer . From December 31, 2011 until 2014, Murray was looked after by former world-class player Ivan Lendl . As every year since 2008, Murray ended the year in fourth place.

2012: Olympic victory and first Grand Slam title

In early January 2012, Murray won the Brisbane ATP tournament . At the following Australian Open he made it to the semifinals, where he was defeated by the eventual winner Đoković despite a 2-1 lead by sets as in the previous year. After losing the final at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (March) and the Miami Masters (April) in two sets against Federer and Đoković, Murray reached the quarter-finals at the French Open , where he was defeated by the weaker David Ferrer in four sets.

At the beginning of July, Murray moved into the final at Wimbledon after victories over Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . Since the French Open in 2011, he has always met Roger Federer in Grand Slam tournaments behind Đoković, Nadal and Federer in fourth place . It was Murray's first entry into the finals after failing in the Wimbledon semifinals from 2009 to 2011. At the same time he was the first British finalist in singles since Henry "Bunny" Austin in 1938. After a 1-0 set lead, Murray Federer lost in four sets.

At the Australian Open he reached the final for the third time and lost there in four sets against world number one Đoković. Murray earned another title at the Masters in Miami , where he defeated David Ferrer in three sets in the final. On his 26th birthday, he gave up the second round match against Marcel Granollers at the Rome Masters due to a hip injury. Due to back problems, he also decided not to take part in the French Open . But he returned to the Aegon Championships in London's Queen's Club on June 10th and won the tournament. In the final he defeated Marin Čilić in three sets. On July 7, 2013 Murray won the individual final against Novak Đoković in Wimbledon in three sets. He was the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to have succeeded. At the US Open Murray reached the quarterfinals, where he failed to Stanislas Wawrinka . Immediately after the playoff game against Croatia in the Davis Cup in September 2013, he underwent back surgery due to persistent injury problems. The season ended prematurely. At the end of the year he was named Sportsman of the Year in Great Britain.

2014

Murray hired Amélie Mauresmo as a trainer in spring 2014 . He started the 2014 season in Doha . At the Australian Open , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Federer. He also succeeded in doing this at the French Open , where he clearly defeated Nadal in three sets in the semifinals. At Wimbledon , the title defense ended in the quarter-finals when Murray lost straight to Grigor Dimitrov in three sets. At the Masters tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati , he also moved into the quarter-finals, as well as subsequently at the US Open . It then fell back to 11th place in the world rankings and was no longer in the top ten for the first time since June 2008.

2015: Davis Cup victory

At the Australian Open he reached the final, which he lost to Novak Đoković in four sets. At the first Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , he lost in the semifinals and finals against Đoković. At the BMW Open in Munich he reached his first final in a clay court tournament, which he won against Philipp Kohlschreiber . A week later at the Mutua Madrid Open , he finally won his first Masters title on the red ashes. There he defeated Rafael Nadal 6: 3, 6: 2. At the French Open , as in the previous year, he advanced to the semi-finals, in which he had to admit defeat Novak Đoković in just five sets. Murray won his 34th title at the AEGON Championships in London. He defeated Kevin Anderson in the final . At Wimbledon he reached the semi-finals, where Roger Federer got the upper hand against him in three sets. He celebrated his fourth title of the season at the Canada Masters when he defeated Novak Đoković in three sets in the final. In Cincinnati he reached the semifinals, while he failed at the following US Open in the round of 16 to Kevin Anderson. At the Masters in Shanghai and Paris , he reached the semifinals and the final, respectively. Both times he was defeated by Novak Đoković. Andy Murray had already qualified for the World Tour Finals since August. After an opening win against David Ferrer and a defeat against Rafael Nadal, he lost the decisive group game against Stan Wawrinka and was eliminated in the group stage.

Andy Murray celebrated his biggest success of the season in the Davis Cup . With two singles victories against the United States in the first round, two further singles victories against Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals against France as well as a success in doubles with brother Jamie and also two victories in singles and one in doubles against Australia in the semifinals Andy Murray was largely responsible for the British team's first entry into the final since 1978. He was also undefeated in the final against Belgium : with two wins in singles and one more in doubles, he played a key role in all points of the 3-1 final result.

2016: Second Wimbledon and Olympic victory, number 1 in the world rankings

Murray after his second Wimbledon title in 2016

In 2016, Murray reached the final of the Australian Open for the fifth time , where he met Novak Đoković for the fourth time and lost to him in three sets with 1: 6, 5: 7, 6: 7 (3: 7). Again he was defeated by the Serb on clay in the final at the Madrid Masters , while in the final of the Rome Masters Đoković was clearly defeated in two sets (6: 3, 6: 3). At the French Open , Murray reached the individual final for the first time after beating the Swiss defending champion Stan Wawrinka in the semi -final, where he lost again to Đoković in four sets (6: 3, 1: 6, 2: 6, 4: 6).

Murray achieved his first success of the season on grass at the AEGON Championships at the Queen's Club in London , where he won the final against Canadian Milos Raonic in three sets with 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 4, 6: 3, making him the winner with his fifth title to the sole record winner. His biggest success of the season to date was at the Wimbledon Championships , where he was victorious in the individual final for the second time after 2013 and won against Raonic 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 3), 7: 6 (7: 2). He then won the gold medal in the men's singles at the Olympic tennis tournament in Rio de Janeiro against Juan Martín del Potro 7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 2 and 7: 5 for the second time after 2012 on August 14, 2016 . He also had the honor of wearing the flag for his country at the opening ceremony.

Murray's winning streak finally ended after 22 games in the final of the Masters tournament in Cincinnati , in which he had to admit defeat to Marin Čilić . Even at the US Open it was not enough to win the title, Murray failed in a hard-fought quarter-final game after five sets against Kei Nishikori . In the last part of the season he started a new series of victories and won the tournament in Beijing , the Shanghai Masters and the title in Vienna . Before the last Masters in Paris , Murray had put himself in the position to replace Novak Đoković at the top of the world rankings. Since Đoković was eliminated early in the quarter-finals, Murray's entry into the final game was enough to take the position at the top of the world rankings for the first time on November 7, 2016. He is the first world number one in singles from the United Kingdom, after his brother Jamie Murray had already succeeded in doubles on April 4, 2016. By winning the final against John Isner , Murray secured his eighth title of the season, his previous record had been six titles in 2009. At the final ATP World Tour Finals 2016 Murray reached the final for the first time, in which he defeated Novak Đoković 6: 3 and 6: 4. So he ended the season as the world leader with nine season titles.

2017: injuries and loss of number 1

At the beginning of the season he reached the final in Qatar , but lost it in three sets against Novak Đoković. At the Australian Open , Murray surprisingly failed in the round of 16 against Mischa Zverev . Then he was able to win the tournament in Dubai in the final against Fernando Verdasco in two sets. Before that he was able to fend off seven match points against Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals. It was not until the French Open that Murray was able to move into a semifinals after a few early defeats, which he lost in five sets against Stan Wawrinka, before he was able to defeat Juan Martín del Potro and Kei Nishikori, among others. At the lawn tournament in London's Queen's Club , he entered as defending champion, but was eliminated in the first round. In Wimbledon he could not repeat his triumph from the previous year after losing in five sets to Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals . After he then had to skip the American hard court season, he lost the top spot in the world rankings to Rafael Nadal. At Wimbledon he was increasingly struggling with hip problems that did not improve as the season progressed. Then Murray announced the early end of the season in the fall. He finished the season in 16th place.

2018: Operation and comeback

At the beginning of the year he still had hip problems, so he had to cancel planned appearances in Brisbane and Melbourne. In early January he announced that he had undergone hip surgery in Melbourne and that he was planning his comeback at the start of the lawn season in June. At first he wanted to compete in the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , but then withdrew. He finally made his comeback at the Queen's Club in London, where he was eliminated in the first round against Nick Kyrgios. At the next tournament in Eastbourne he beat Stan Wawrinka in three sets in the first round, but lost to Kyle Edmund in the next round. After these two tournaments, he canceled his participation in Wimbledon because of the stresses of a Grand Slam tournament. Due to the results since mid-2017, it fell to 839th place in the world rankings. Even after that he played only a few tournaments, in Washington, DC he withdrew after three victories in the quarterfinals. At the Masters in Cincinnati , he was eliminated in the first round in three sets against Lucas Pouille. At the US Open , he took part in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in the season. In the first round Murray defeated James Duckworth in four sets, in the second round he was also eliminated in four sets against Fernando Verdasco. He played his last tournament of the season in Shenzhen when he again lost to Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals in two sets. Following this tournament, he ended the season early in order to better prepare for the next season.

2019: Announced resignation, surgery and renewed comeback

On January 10, 2019, Murray announced his resignation at a press conference after this year's tournament in Wimbledon at the latest . The reason for this are the hip problems that have persisted for 20 months and that cause him constant pain. Nonetheless, Murray, who was only 230th in the world rankings, took part in his first round game at the Australian Open using the Protected Ranking . There he was defeated by the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who was in 22nd position, in five sets (4: 6, 4: 6, 7: 6, 7: 6, 2: 6).

On January 29, Murray announced that he had had another hip operation. An artificial joint was implanted in him.

In June, Murray made his comeback again with the help of a protected ranking as a double player alongside the Spaniard Feliciano López at the ATP tournament in the Queen's Club in London . With López, who also won the individual competition, Murray beat the top seeded duo Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah in two sets in the first round as well as last year's winners Henri Kontinen and John Peers, who were third in the semifinals, 7: 5, 6: 7, [10: 5]. In the final, Murray and López were able to prevail against Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury after two tight sets in the match tie-break . For Murray it was the third success in an ATP doubles tournament. At the same time, he stated that he no longer had hip pain. After this success, Murray competed a week later with the Brazilian Marcelo Melo at the tournament in Eastbourne , where both had to admit defeat in two sets to the previously defeated duo Cabal / Farah in the first round. Murray then decided to participate in Wimbledon in the men's doubles together with the French Pierre-Hugues Herbert and in mixed with the American friend Serena Williams . In the men's doubles, Murray and Herbert reached the second round, where they were eliminated in four sets against the sixth seeded duo Nikola Mektić and Franko Škugor from Croatia. Named “Murrena” or “Serandy” by the audience, the pairing Murray / Williams lost in the mixed round of 16 with 3: 6, 6: 4, 2: 6 against the top seeded last year's winners Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar .

At the Davis Cup in November 2019 he played for the British team in singles against the Netherlands. Murray has been on pause since November 2019 due to renewed complaints on the operated hip.
