location
's-Hertogenbosch is located in the south of the Netherlands, about 80 km southeast of Amsterdam . The total area is 91.26 km².
's-Hertogenbosch is about 6 to 7 m above sea level in a marshland on the Dieze , a tributary of the Maas , and on the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal .
history
The district of Empel lies at a point where the Batavians already had a settlement and a temple for their god Donar , in the Latin form of the name after the dedicatory inscription Hercules Magusanus .
Duke Henry I of Brabant granted the town in 1185, the city charter . It lies on a small ridge of sand, surrounded by swampy terrain. That is why it was strategically important in the Middle Ages . The Herzogenbusch fortress was considered almost impregnable. The city's merchants imported wine from Cologne , sandstone from Liège and fish from the Baltic Sea countries.
Between 1450 and 1525, the city experienced a period of economic prosperity, which ended in the 16th century with the Eighty Years War . The city was conquered by the Dutch in 1629 by Friedrich Heinrich von Orange . Then the citadel was built. In 1815 the city became the provincial capital.
In May 1940, the city - like the rest of the Netherlands - was occupied by Wehrmacht troops (" Western Campaign ") and liberated on October 29, 1944 by Allied troops.
Economy and Transport
The economic structure of 's-Hertogenbosch has many medium-sized and small industrial and trading companies; however, the service sector is dominant. There is a large Heineken brewery in the village .
