Emmanuel Marie Joseph Antony (Maan) Sassen (born September 11, 1911 in 's-Hertogenbosch , † December 20, 1995 ibid) was a Dutch politician .

Life

After graduating from high school, Emmanuel Sassen studied law at St. Jans-Lyceum in 's-Hertogenbosch and obtained his doctorate in law . Jur. Between 1936 and 1950 he worked as a lawyer and public prosecutor. In 1939 he became a member of the Noord-Brabant Province . There he resigned in 1946 and was elected to the First Chamber of the States General for the Catholic People's Party (KVP) in the same year . In 1948 he left parliament and was Dutch Minister for the Colonies for about a year. 1952 to 1958 he was a member of the second chamber of the Dutch parliament . At the same time he is a member of the parliamentary assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community , the European Parliament . In the European Parliament he was the first group leader of the EPP .

In 1967 he was elected European Commissioner. He succeeded Hans von der Groeben as commissioner for competition . 1970 ended his term in the Rey Commission , his successor as competition commissioner was Albert Borschette , as Dutch commissioner the later commission president (1972-73) Sicco Mansholt .

1970 to 1976 he was permanent representative of the Netherlands to the European Economic Community (EEC). In 1986 he was awarded the Robert Schuman Medal .
