Views on immigration

Statements made during an interview by the House of Lords EU Internal Affairs Subcommittee investigating global migration issues :

  1. Migration is a "decisive engine for economic growth " in some EU nations, "as difficult as it can be to explain this to the citizens of those states."
  2. "Many of us still have a feeling of our [ethnic] homogeneity and our difference from others, which I believe the European Union should do its best to undermine."
  3. An aging or declining native population in countries like Germany or the southern EU is the "key argument - and I hesitate to use the word because it has been the subject of attacks - for the development of multicultural states."
  4. “Europe is facing an immigration disaster. Central politicians, held hostage by xenophobic parties, practice rhetoric directed against immigrants in order to win over a frightened audience while the out-of-towners are increasingly marginalized in schools, cities and workplaces. Yet many employers lack the workers they need, despite high unemployment in large parts of the continent. There are not enough engineers, doctors and nurses; also farm workers and nurses. And Europe can never have enough entrepreneurs whose ideas drive the economy and create jobs. "

More quotes:

  1. "Last year, during the Arab Revolution, the EU missed a historic opportunity to begin weaving the two sides of the Mediterranean together".
  2. The rejection of more comprehensive globalization is "morally unsustainable"

On February 3, 2017, a report by Sutherland was presented to the UN General Assembly. The report relates to a. on the development of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the Global Compact on Refugees .

Mainstream politicians, held hostage by xenophobic parties, adopt anti-immigrant rhetoric to win over a fearful public, while the foreign-born are increasingly marginalized in schools, cities and at the workplace. Yet, despite high unemployment across much of the Continent, too many employers lack the workers they need. Engineers, doctors and nurses are in short supply; so, too, are farmhands and health aides.
