Stavros Dimas [ ˈstavrɔs ˈðimas ] ( Greek Σταύρος Δήμας ; born April 30, 1941 in Athens ) is a Greek politician and former EU commissioner for environmental policy .
Life
Dimas studied law at the University of Athens and New York University . He first worked in a law firm on Wall Street and then for the World Bank .
politics
Since 1977 he worked in Greek politics for the Nea Dimokratia . He held various ministerial offices such as trade (1980–1981), agriculture (1989–1990) and industry (1990–1991).
From November 11, 2011 to May 16, 2012, Dimas was Foreign Minister in the transitional government of Loukas Papadimos .
On December 9, 2014, Prime Minister Andonis Samaras ( Samaras cabinet ) proposed him as a candidate for the presidential election . However, in three ballots in the Greek parliament on December 17, 23 and 29, 2014, he missed the two-thirds majority required by the constitution and 60% of the votes in the third ballot, which is why new parliamentary elections were necessary.
Career in the European Union
In March 2004 he succeeded Anna Diamantopoulou as EU Commissioner for Labor and Social Affairs ( Commission Prodi , until November 2004). From 2004 to February 2010 he headed the Environment Department in the Barroso I Commission . He was responsible for renewable energies , noise reduction , climate protection , biotechnology and the profitability of environmental measures.
As Commissioner, he ensured, among other things, that sustainability and environmental protection were recognized in the Lisbon agenda on the competitiveness of the EU . In addition, the EU Commission has generally recognized environmental protection as necessary for long-term prosperity.
In 2007, Dimas criticized German climate policy : Germany had lost its pioneering role in this area to countries like the United Kingdom and Sweden . In the following years there was an enormous expansion of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems in Germany (see e.g. Renewable Energies # Situation in the European Union ) .
In 2008 he enforced an import and trade ban for products made from seals for the EU. Dimas had criticized the cruel way with which the seals are killed .
