Ignacia de Loyola de Palacio del Valle-Lersundi (born September 16, 1950 in Madrid ; † December 13, 2006 ibid) was a Spanish politician ( PP ) and Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport and Energy under Romano Prodi (1999– 2004).

Life

Loyola de Palacio had a sister, Ana de Palacio del Valle-Lersundi , former Foreign Minister of Spain, two years older .

De Palacio studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid and was active for many years in the conservative Spanish People's Party ( Partido Popular ). From 1996 to 1999 she was Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the government of José María Aznar .

She became a member of the European Parliament in the 1999 European elections . A few weeks later, however, she left Parliament again, as she became Vice-President of the European Commission with the appointment of the Prodi Commission, where she was also responsible for the transport and energy departments. She held these positions until the Barroso I Commission was appointed in 2004. Under her successor Jacques Barrot , she was one of the six coordinators for the priority axes of the Trans-European Transport Network , where she was responsible for priority axis 6 Lyon-Trieste-Divaca / Koper-Divaca-Ljubljana-Budapest-Csop.

It caused a scandal in 2004 when she wished Cuba’s ruler Fidel Castro dead after he had broken his left knee and right upper arm in a fall. This incident increased their isolation within the European Commission.

The politician, who is considered to be conservative, died late in the evening on December 13, 2006 at the age of 56 in a Madrid clinic of complications from cancer.

Quotes

«Todos esperamos que se muera cuanto antes. No digo que lo maten, digo que se muera. Yo no le deseo la muerte a nadie, pero la única solución sería que Castro desapareciera. »

“We all hope he dies as soon as possible. I'm not saying he should be killed, I'm saying he should die. I don't wish anyone dead, but the only solution would be that Castro disappear. "
