Sandra Kalniete [ ˈsandra ˈkalniete ] (born December 22, 1952 in Togur , Tomsk Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a Latvian politician . She was Foreign Minister from 2002 to 2004 and EU Commissioner between May 1, 2004 and November 22, 2004 .

Life

Sandra Kalniete was born in the Russian Oblast of Tomsk, where her parents were deported as children and adolescents in 1941 and 1949 by the Soviet power from Soviet-occupied Latvia. She studied art at the Latvian Art Academy from 1977 to 1981 and worked as an art historian. In this profession she brought out a catalog of the picture knitting by Rūdolfs Heimrāts (1929–1992) (1987) and a book on Latvian textile art (1989).

Her involvement in the Latvian independence movement led her to politics in 1988. She was vice-chairman of the Latvian Popular Front , the largest of the independence-striving political organizations of Soviet Latvia.

After the independence of the Republic of Latvia was restored, she worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was her country's ambassador to the United Nations (1993 to 1997), in France (1997 to 2000) and UNESCO (2000 to 2002). She became Latvian Foreign Minister in November 2002 and held this post until 2004.

From March to November 2004 she was together with Franz Fischler European Commissioner for Agriculture and Fisheries .

Surprisingly for many Latvians, she was not nominated again as EU Commissioner for her country at the end of 2004. As a result, she temporarily withdrew from politics and refused to take on the minor diplomatic tasks that were offered to her. In 2006 Kalniete joined the Jaunais laiks (JL, in German: New Era) party. In 2008 she moved with a large part of the JL members to the newly founded Pilsoniskā savienība (PS, in German: Citizens' Union), of which she became chairman. In 2011 the PS was part of the new Vienotība party (in German: unity). Elected to the European Parliament for Pilsoniskā savienība 2009 and Vienotība 2014 , she belongs to the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) .

Her report Ar balles kurpēm Sibīrijas sniegos (German title: Mit Ballschuhe im Sibirischen Schnee , Herbig 2005, Knaur TB 2007) about the deportation of her family to Siberia, which lasted until 1957, caused a sensation . Her book, which has so far been translated into 13 languages, made a significant contribution to the fact that the deportation of 35,000 Latvians in 1941 and a further 43,000 Latvians in March 1949 through and into the Soviet Union became known outside of Latvia.

Sandra Kalniete gave the much-discussed opening speech at the Leipzig Book Fair 2004.

EU parliamentarian

As an EU parliamentarian, Kalniete was Deputy Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Japan from 2009 to 2014. She is a member of the Committee for Internal Market and Consumer Protection . As a deputy, she is a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the delegation in the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee .

She is one of 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
