Poul Nielson [ ˈpɔu̯l ˈnɪlsn̩ ] (born April 11, 1943 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish politician and former European Commissioner .

Nielson grew up in Copenhagen and graduated from Århus University with a degree in political science in 1972 . Since his studies he worked for the Danish social democrats . Among other things, he was a member of the Danish parliament , UN ambassador for his country and Danish energy minister from 1979 to 1982 and development minister from 1994 to 1999 .

From September 1999 to November 2004 he was European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid in the Prodi Commission .

Nielson is married with three children.
