Manuel Marín González (born October 21, 1949 in Ciudad Real , † December 4, 2017 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician .

Manuel Marín studied law in Madrid and then specialized in community law at the University of Nancy and the College of Europe . In 1974, Marín joined the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) , for which he was a member of the Spanish House of Commons ( Congreso de los Diputados ) from 1977 to 1982 and 2000 to 2008 . From 1982 to 1985 he was in the Spanish government with the rank of minister responsible for the final phase of the country's EU accession negotiations .

From 1986 to 1999 he was a member of the European Commission in various functions , e. B. as Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities under Commission President Jacques Delors and as Commissioner for Relations with the Mediterranean, Latin America and Central and East Asia under Commission President Jacques Santer . The Erasmus program was created under his responsibility as EU Commissioner . After the resignation of the Santer Commission as a result of a corruption scandal in 1999, Marín served for a few months as President of the European Commission in the temporarily formed Marín Commission .

After returning to Spanish politics, Marín was President of the Spanish House of Commons from 2004 to March 2008. In 2007 he announced his retirement from politics and moved to the head of a Spanish foundation.

Marín was married and had two children. On December 4, 2017, he died of cancer .
