Ludwig Gall
Heinrich Ludwig Lambert Gall (born December 28, 1791 in Aldenhoven , † January 31, 1863 in Trier ) was an inventor and social theorist. He is considered to be the savior of wine growing on the Moselle .
Life
After various positions, Gall came to Trier in 1815 and was employed as a secretary in the newly formed district government in 1816. Due to the plight of the population, he carried out an emigration campaign to Harrisburg in the USA , but returned in 1820 and wrote a two-volume critical work about his experiences during this campaign. From 1826, Gall worked for the government in Koblenz to deal with domain matters and promoted the replacement of the right to tithe in the vineyards on the right bank of the Rhine. Later he tried to alleviate the plight of the Moselle winegrowers, for which he developed the process of "wet improvement" or, more appropriately, "wet sugaring". Several poor harvests, especially in 1850, had resulted in many winemakers giving up viticulture. Since the must in bad years contained too much acid and too little sugar, water and sugar were added to dilute the acid. For Gall, this was not a falsification of the wine, since it is an art product anyway. In 1857 he founded a weekly newspaper, the "Allgemeine Deutsche Telegraph", based in Stuttgart.
Services
Gall's inventions are now largely out of date. With his “wet sugaring” process, he was considered the savior of Moselle viticulture. In retrospect, however, one has to state that the application of the process ruined the reputation of Moselle wine and that it was long considered an inferior cheap product.
