Society for the history of wine

The Society for the History of Wine eV (GGW) is a German non-profit association for the promotion, research and documentation of the history of wine and wine culture.

The company was founded on January 16, 1959. Its main objective is evident from the name, but at the same time it aims to deepen the sense of today's wine as a cultural asset and general historical awareness. The goal is pursued through diverse contacts to authorities, research and teaching institutes for viticulture, libraries, archives, museums and specialist publishers and relevant associations in viticulture, wine trade, sparkling wine cellars and distilleries, which are ideally members of society.

The GGW is chaired by Hans Reinhard Seeliger , Christine Krämer is vice-president . The management has been the responsibility of Ernst H. Rühl since April 5, 2019 . In 2018 the society had 676 members from all over the German-speaking area, made up of institutions, companies in the wine industry and individuals.

Bibliography on the history and culture of wine

The GGW provides access to BiblioVino, a bibliography on the history and culture of wine , on its website . This wine bibliography was founded by the GGW and set up by Renate Schoene (retired library clerk) and looked after until 2013. After a transitional phase, it is now being carried out by the Koblenz Regional Library Center on behalf of the GGW in terms of library and technology.

The online accessible database replaced the printed 2nd edition of the bibliography on the history of wine with 14,713 wine titles, for which the editorial deadline was on December 31, 1986. The reporting period of the recorded wine writings extends from 1471 to the present day. The bibliography is constantly updated with mainly new German-language and older wine literature. In addition, more than 270 wine magazines are listed.

Wine culture personalities

Also available on the GGW website is a collection of short biographies of important personalities in wine culture, which has meanwhile grown to 553 entries, primarily German language and origin.

Collections

There are collections of specialist literature, historical wine labels as well as coins, stamps and ex-libris with wine motifs. The specialist literature (approx. 2,200 volumes) is part of the main library of the Geisenheim University , where the society's archive with the collections is also located. The coin collection is located in the Museum of Wine Culture in Deidesheim .

Messages

The GGW publishes two to three messages a year with book reviews and reports on the annual events with numerous specialist articles on current research results and association activities.
