The museum for wine culture in the small Palatinate town of Deidesheim shows exhibits that document the influence of wine and viticulture on the social areas of religion, art, economy, medicine and politics; In addition, everyday life as a winemaker is a theme in earlier times. The museum for wine culture is located in the rooms of the historic town hall in the center of Deidesheim.

history

The wine museum opened on May 25, 1986. The supporting association of the museum is the association “Museum für Weinkultur e. V. ". For a long time, the former Mayor of Deidesheim, Stefan Gillich , who was later appointed honorary chairman, acted as its first chairman . In addition to donations from visitors and membership fees from the sponsoring association, the museum is also financed by vine leaseholders who have leased a vine in the so-called “Prominent Vineyard” in Deidesheim's Paradise Garden for a fee - the monetary equivalent of a Logel grape must . In return for the payment, the vine leaseholder receives a bottle of wine from this vineyard every year. The "Prominenten-Weinberg" has been run by the city of Deidesheim since 1981. Vines are leased to prominent personalities from politics, culture, medicine, etc. The vine tenants include Margaret Thatcher , John Major , Michail Gorbatschow , Boris Jelzin , Richard von Weizsäcker and Helmut Kohl .

Exhibits

Figure room

The exhibits that are shown include vessels in which wine was transported and drunk from, for example jugs, amphorae , clay bottles, jugs, mugs, vases and glasses - from Roman times to the present day. Among these vessels are also many wine bottles, which document their diversity among the Palatinate wine-growing businesses.

Writings on viticulture and viticulture are laid out, including the important work "History of Viticulture", which was published in 1907 by Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan , and a reprint of the dissertation with which Theodor Heuss obtained his doctorate in 1905, with the title "Viticulture and Weingärtner stand in Heilbronn am Neckar ”.

A figure room shows how the annual course of winemakers and wine cellars used to be, from work in the vineyard to work in the cellar, and what equipment was used. Other focal points are the spread of the cultivated vine, viewed geographically and temporally; Wine and medicine, for example with a doctor's prescription from a bygone era as an exhibit that prescribes drinking wine; Wine and religion, themed with religious clothing and objects that are decorated with wine motifs. The exhibits also include postage stamps and postmarks, coins and medals with wine motifs; In addition, a collection of wine labels - utility labels and artistically designed labels that show their development over time.

Permanent exhibition "Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve"

A permanent exhibition on the subject of the Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve is attached to the museum in a separate room in the southern wing of the building . This includes, among other things, a three-dimensional landscape model of the biosphere reserve, with the help of which animated representations of rivers, hiking trails, sights and other information can be called up. A terminal for playing multimedia presentations on the biosphere reserve complements the landscape model. A kind of "branch" of the museum is the approximately 12 ha large cultural landscape "Am Kirchenberg", about 1 km northwest of Deidesheim, whose sponsorship has taken over the Museum of wine culture. It is part of the Haardtrand - Am Bechsteinkopf nature reserve .
