Sir Matthew Christopher Bourne OBE (born January 13, 1960 in Hackney , London ) is a British choreographer .

Bourne was an autograph hunter in London's West End as a teenager and left school in 1978 to work for the BBC, a theater agency and the National Theater in small jobs. He never had dance classes, but directed amateur dance theater performances as a teenager. From 1982 he studied dance theater at the Laban Center for Movement and Dance in Deptfort in south-east London with a bachelor's degree in 1986. In the last year of his studies, he danced with the Laban Center's Transitions Dance Company. After graduation he founded the dance ensemble Adventures in Motion Pictures (AMP) with Emma Gladstone and David Massingham , of which he became the sole artistic director in 1991. In 2002 he founded the New Adventures ensemble . He lives in London (Islington) and Brighton .

With AMP he was one of the most popular and celebrated choreographers in Great Britain. Productions included: Spitfire, The Infernal Galop, Town and Country, Deadly Serious, Nutcracker, Highland Fling, Edward Scissorhands, Swan Lake (one of his greatest hits, with worldwide touring performances), Cinderella and The Car Man. In 2002 he founded his ensemble New Adventures, the same with Play without words, which received the Laurence Olivier Award. In 2002 he had great success with his production of Nutcracker at Sadler's Wells Theater (it was recorded for the BBC and went on a world tour). His very successful version of Edward Scissorhands followed in 2005, based on the film by Tim Burton . In 2008 he performed Dorian Gray as a ballet at the Edinburgh Festival.

He has also choreographed for musicals (both in the West End and Broadway), including Olivier! (Cameron Mackintosh, 1993 and in a new production in 2008 with Rowan Atkinson ), My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Mary Poppins .

In 2003 he received the Hamburg Shakespeare Prize . He is OBE (2001). In 1999 he received the Tony Award for Swan Lake (twice, for choreography and musical direction, in the same year also the Drama Desk Award for Swan Lake) and in 1999 the Laurence Olivier Award for Swan Lake (Swan Lake, with the music of Tchaikovsky, instead of ballerinas by male dancers, the TV adaptation also received an Emmy nomination), 2002 for My Fair Lady, 2003 for Play Without Words and 2005 for Mary Poppins (with Stephen Mear).
