David Tennant (2019)

David Tennant (* 18th April 1971 in Bathgate , West Lothian , Scotland as David John McDonald ) is a British actor and voice actor .

Earned international fame of the award-winning performer from the 2000s through his portrayal of tenth Doctor in the science fiction - cult series Doctor Who , the DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch , the Kilgrave in the Netflix series Jessica Jones and Barty Crouch Jr. . in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . From 2017 on he embodies another cult figure as the voice of Dagobert Duck in DuckTales .

childhood and education

David John McDonald was born as the youngest son of the Presbyterian Reverend Alexander "Sandy" McDonald (1937-2016) and Essedale Helen McDonald, née McLeod, (1940-2007) in Bathgate ( West Lothian ). He grew up in Ralston (district of Paisley ) near Glasgow , where his father was pastor and at times minister (see Bishop ) of the Church of Scotland . Tennant's mother was a housewife and mother, and volunteer in the Church. His brother Blair is six years older and his sister Karen is eight years older.

When his parents explained to him what an actor was at the age of three, he first expressed his desire to become an actor himself. As a fan of the British science fiction family series Doctor Who , he cites the reenactment of film scenes in the family garden as his earliest childhood memories. His parents tried to convince him to pursue a more conventional career, but Tennant said he was amazingly determined as a kid and never dissuaded from his career aspirations. During his school days he performed in the school theater and attended the RSAMD Saturday courses for artistically gifted students . When he registered for his first television role at the age of 16 with the British actors' union Equity , an actor of the same name was already enrolled there, so he used a stage name that he chose after Neil Tennant , the singer of the Pet Shop Boys . As one's own name is the first and most important figurehead of every employee, especially in the film industry, this regulation is intended to avoid confusion.

Today David Tennant uses the self-chosen surname as a private person, his wife and children also wear it. The official and complete name change (in all identification documents etc.) is the result of initially unsuccessful negotiations between British Equity and its US counterpart , the Screen Actors Guild . An actor of the same name was already enrolled there. Tennant would have had to change his name again for his first American film project Fright Night despite more than 20 years of activity under this stage name. A legal precedent, however, allows actors in the United States to keep not their stage name, but at least their real name, even if it is already taken within the Screen Actors Guild. In order to avoid another expensive legal battle and not to have to give up his artist (and thus brand) name, Tennant was asked by Equity to completely give up his maiden name McDonald instead and officially change it to Tennant . The company served its purpose, since then he has been able to work under the name Tennant in all international projects without any problems. His eldest daughter, who was born during this period of upheaval, was given the name McDonald when she was born in April 2011. Her last name was also changed to Tennant less than two weeks later.

After graduating from high school in 1988, Tennant moved to Glasgow and began studying acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) as the youngest of his class. At first he lived with his older sister, then in shared apartments with fellow students. In 1991 he successfully completed his bachelor's degree.

Career

Early career

Tennant began his acting career at the age of 16 in an anti-smoking television commercial for the Scottish Health Authority while he was still in school. A year later he got a role in an episode of the Scottish children's series Dramarama . Tennant's first professional role after graduating from college was with the 7:84 political theater company . The company was founded in 1971 by dramaturge John McGrath and named after a 1966 statistic in the Economist , according to which 7% of the Scottish population owned 84% of the total wealth. Tennant's first appearance with the group was a production by Bertolt Brecht's The Temporary Ascent of Arturo Ui , in which the only six members of the ensemble divided 20 roles among themselves.

In his first major television role, he played the manic-depressive Campbell in 1994 in the six-part BBC series Takin 'Over the Asylum . The series won several awards, including a BAFTA and BAFTA Scotland Award for best series. For Tennant it became a stepping stone to the English theater and later to film, according to him he got every other job because producers saw him in Takin 'Over the Asylum .

Royal National Theater, London

At the latest with his theater appearances in What the Butler Saw (1994-1995 with the Royal National Theater ) and The Glass Menagerie (1996 with the Dundee Repertory Theater) he drew attention as a stage actor. In the same year he received an engagement from the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company . His first role as a permanent member of the ensemble was that of the court jester touchstone in Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It (1996). Tennant later said that an impressive portrayal of this very figure made him enthusiastic about Shakespeare's world for the first time as a young student. At the same time he appeared with the RSC in two modern plays, The Herbal Bed and The General from America . In the latter, Tennant already took on the leading role of Alexander Hamilton . He then played mostly comedic roles, such as Antipholus von Syracuse in Die Komödie der Errungen (2000), but also tragic roles such as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (2000). He was nominated for an Ian Charleson Award for his performance in The Comedy of Errors . An Olivier nomination for best actor for his portrayal of Jeff in Lobby Hero followed in 2003 .

He got his first leading role on the big screen in 1998 in the love comedy LA Without a Map , which was also shown in German cinemas. In 2003 he had a role in the star-studded British film Bright Young Things . In the DVD audio commentary , director and screenwriter Stephen Fry praised Tennant's performance, especially his accent, saying that in a few years everyone would know Tennant's name.

From 2004, Tennant's popularity rose through leading and supporting roles in the British television productions He Knew He Was Right (2004), Blackpool (2004), Casanova (2005) and The Enemy in My House ( Secret Smile , 2005). In these films he plays both highly comedic ( Casanova ) and dramatic roles ( He Knew He Was Right ); Blackpool is also designed as a jukebox musical and Secret Smile shows Tennant as a murderous sociopath. Within a short time he was able to present and distinguish himself as a versatile actor. Through his role as Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Tennant also became internationally known.

Doctor Who (2005-2010)

After the Doctor Who producer and screenwriter Russell T Davies had already worked with Tennant in the three-part television series Casanova (2005), he offered him the coveted title role in the cult science fiction series. Tennant embodies the tenth doctor , and played the role in seasons 2-4 and the 2009/2010 Specials , in several special episodes, in an episode of the offshoot series The Sarah Jane Adventures , in parodies (e.g. in Extras or in Catherine Tate Show ), in the animated series Infinite Quest and Dreamland, and in several Doctor Who audiobooks. Top-class actors such as Timothy Dalton , Derek Jacobi and Lindsay Duncan appeared in guest roles alongside Tennant.

The role made Tennant one of Britain's most famous and sought-after actors. Among other things, he received the BAFTA Cymru for "Best Actor" in 2006 and the National Television Award for "Most Popular Actor" four times in a row , the most important award given by viewers in Great Britain. He kept talking about his joy in fulfilling his childhood dream with the role .

The filming of Doctor Who takes nine months of the year, Tennant was also seen in other, very different roles. Among other things, he played the leading roles in the BBC productions Recovery (2007), Learners (2007) and Einstein and Eddington (2008). In the latter he embodies the astrophysicist Arthur Stanley Eddington alongside Andy Serkis as Albert Einstein .

The Guardian summarized his popularity and acting versatility in the summer of 2007 (Tennant was ranked 24th on their list of the 100 Most Influential People in the UK Media, making it the highest ranked actor):

" David Tennant is the most powerful actor in television. The MediaGuardian 100 definition of a star is someone who can get a project off the ground simply by agreeing to be in it. Tennant is that man. The 10th Doctor Who, Tennant […] rapidly made the role his own. Indeed, critics have acclaimed the latest series as the best yet. However, appearing in the prime time family show does not stop Tennant starring in edgier, less mainstream drama, such as BBC1's recovery about a man left with brain damage after a car crash. The West Lothian-born actor is also slated to appear alongside Andy Serkis in a BBC and HBO co-production about Albert Einstein and the theory of relativity . As a general rule of thumb , the more facial hair Tennant has in any particular role, the more serious the drama. Masterminded by Russell T Davies, another entry in this year's Media Guardian 100, the return of Doctor Who continues to pull in the viewers for BBC1 in its crucial Saturday teatime slot. It is likely to continue to do so with Tennant having signed up to appear in at least one more series of the hit sci-fi drama. Doctor Who was rewarded last year with three Bafta awards, including best drama series, and three of the main prizes at the National Television Awards, including most popular actor for Tennant. Tennant's other TV credits include Casanova - another Russell T Davies production, musical drama Blackpool and Anthony Trollope adaptation He Knew He Was Right. A lifelong Doctor Who fan, Tennant's A-list status was cemented this year when he was included for the first time in Who's Who . [...] "

In October 2008, Tennant announced that he was leaving the series. For him it is the "best job in the world", but he wants to leave before the role becomes routine for him. His last regular Doctor Who episode, The End of Time Part 2 , aired on UK television on January 1, 2010 and was viewed by 10.4 million viewers.

In November 2013, Tennant slipped back into his star role of the tenth doctor for The Day of the Doctor , the special episode for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who . Alongside him, his successor Matt Smith and " War Doctor " John Hurt were also represented in the roles of their respective incarnations of the character.

Hamlet and Love's Labor's lost

Royal Shakespeare Theater , Stratford-upon-Avon

At the same time as Tennant, showrunner Russell T Davies and production manager / BBC Wales boss Julie Gardner said goodbye to Doctor Who after five years to turn to new projects. In order to be able to adequately prepare and bridge the major cut and the resulting changes in personnel and working methods, instead of a full Doctor Who season, only five extra long episodes were planned for 2009 . For this reason, Tennant was able to return to the Royal Shakespeare Theater in 2008 to first perform the title role of the Shakespeare tragedy Hamlet (alongside Patrick Stewart as Claudius) and then the comedy Lost Love Labor in Stratford-upon-Avon with the ensemble of the RSC . Because of Tennant's popularity in Great Britain, the performance attracted a lot of media interest and 6,000 tickets for the first season were sold out within three hours. Despite the general ban on resale, individual traders on the Ebay trading platform took the equivalent of over 600 euros per card.

The Hamlet production, as well as Tennant's portrayal of the Danish prince, was received extremely positively by theater critics. The production of Love's Labor's Lost , however, received mediocre reviews, but here, too, Tennant's excellent performance in the role of Berowne was highlighted. Charles Spencer, theater critic for the Daily Telegraph , described the Hamlet production as one of the best Hamlet productions he had ever seen, and Tennant as " an actor of extraordinary courage and charisma who has made a persuasive claim to true greatness ". The renowned theater critic Michael Billington OBE also described the Hamlet production in the Guardian under the heading “ David Tennant is the best Hamlet in years ” as “ one of the most richly textured, best-acted versions of the play we have seen in years ” and praised Tennant as " a Hamlet of quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigor and wild humor: one of the funniest I've ever seen " ( a Hamlet of lively intelligence, mimetic vigor and exuberant comedy: one of the funniest representations that I have ever seen ) . Two months later, Billington wrote about lost love affairs:

“Its best feature is Tennant's sparky berowne; [He] uses his Scottish accent to express a pragmatic skepticism [and] frequently hides his embarrassment behind a veil of satiric irony. [...] I wish I admired the rest of Doran's production as much. Undoubtedly the production, played in courtly period costume, looks handsome and there are some good supporting performances. [...] But, considering that Shakespeare's play rejoices in the very verbal virtuosity it is satirizing, the production often seems indifferent to language. [...] It is one of Shakespeare's great comedies and the audience seemed happy enough. But I don't think it's mere nostalgia that makes me think back to the elegiac beauty of John Barton's production [Note: Insz. 1978, also RSC ], which put the language at the center of the play, whereas here it often seems to be a problem to be camouflaged, disguised or visually decorated. [...] But Tennant, more than any other actor in this production, shows a capacity to handle Shakespeare's language with sensitivity. At times he falls too easily into the current Stratford habit of joshing the audience and playing off front-row spectators. But you could hear a pin drop during Berowne's great paean to passion and the power of love over academic study. When Tennant tells us that 'Love's feeling is more soft and sensitive than are the tender horns of cockled snails', it is with the breathless urgency of a man who sees the image he is describing. And when, at the last, Berowne is enjoined by his lover to spend a year visiting the speechless sick, Tennant displays real shock at the idea one can 'move wild laughter in the throat of death'. It is a performance that confirms Tennant's Shakespearean status. "

Hamlet was transferred in December 2008 to London to the Novello Theater, but Tennant suffered a herniated disk and had to leave the stand-in will represent Edward Bennett. Tennant took over the role again in early January.

On behalf of the BBC and the Royal Shakespeare Company, the play was filmed in the summer of 2009 with the same cast and broadcast on December 26, 2009 on BBC Two . The three-hour television film was watched by 900,000 viewers that day, a success rate that drove the BBC to produce more Shakespeare films and documentaries for 2012.

In April 2011 the UK's Royal Mail issued a stamp with Tennant as Prince Hamlet to celebrate the RSC's 50th anniversary. Just two years later, as part of a special edition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, it was once again featured on a national postage stamp. Tennant jokingly described both of these in 2019 as one of the things he was most proud of in his entire career.

Due to the great demand, the play was filmed and made available as a download.

In the US remake of the first season - Gracepoint ( FOX ) - he played the same role again with an American accent and a new name; all other roles were newly cast, the names of the characters retained.

In 2015, he played the villain Kilgrave in the Netflix series Marvel's Jessica Jones .

On July 5, 2016, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS, formerly RSAMD) awarded her 1991 alumnus an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Drama. Other works

Tennant wrote forewords to three books by his friends so far: In 2006 he wrote introductory words to Gary Russell's Doctor Who: The Inside Story . In 2011 there was an introduction to Elisabeth Sladen's posthumously published autobiography in memory of his childhood heroine and later colleague and friend. He also insisted on speaking his words for the accompanying audio book (otherwise read by Caroline John ) himself. Most recently, he wrote in 2017 the preface to the memoirs of his father , entitled Is There Life Outside The Box? To Actor Despairs .

theatre

Theaters without a specific location belong to the West End theater district of London , only the Royal Court Theater and Royal National Theater are located a few kilometers south in the neighboring district of Chelsea and on Waterloo Bridge . The Royal Shakespeare Theater , the headquarters of the Royal Shakespeare Company , is located in Shakespeare's birth town Stratford-upon-Avon ; parts of the interior are modeled on the London Globe Theater - due to the special arrangement of the three-level seating, none of the 1,500 seats are more than 15 Meters from the stage.
