British Police ranks
The British Police Force use the following ranks, with members of the Criminal Police being prefixed with the term "Detective" instead of "Police". For example, the Police Constable (“PC”) has the same rank as the Detective Constable (“DC”) and the Police Inspector (“PI”) has the same rank as the Detective Inspector (“DI”). In particular (but not only) in oral use, the salutation is usually reduced to the appropriate abbreviation, e.g. B. Detective Inspector Miller → [ di aɪ mɪlləɹ ]; Police Constable Smith → [ piː siː smɪθ ].
Badges of rank are commonly worn as epaulettes, but constables and sergeants do not wear epaulets when wearing a collared uniform. Sergeants then wear their badge on their upper arm. Constables and sergeants wear their unit number as a collar tab.
