history

City of London Police van

The City of London Police is the direct successor to the City Guard, which has existed since the 13th century . It has been in its current form since 1839 when the Corporation of London decided to modernize the City Police Department. This should prevent the merger with the Metropolitan Police , which was founded in the same year . This is responsible for the rest of Greater London . Before 1839 there was the Night Watch and the City Patrol for daytime duty, each under the direction of a sheriff. The latter was further developed into the City Day Police based on the model of the Metropolitan Police . In 1838 both organizations were merged and the legal basis for an independent police authority was created with the City of London Police Act 1839.

In 1842 the main guard was moved from the Corporation's Guildhall to 26 Old Jewry and again in 2002 to Wood Street.

There are five departments:

The checkered bands on the helmet or hat are clearly recognizable (see picture). With the City Police they are red and white and with the Metropolitan Police they are black and white.

Houndsditch murders

In 1910, three City of London Police officers (Sergeant Bentley, Constable Choat and Sergeant Tucker) were murdered by socialist anarchists when they surprised them while breaking into a jewelry store. The anarchists were able to flee. After they were tracked down, preparations for their arrest led to the siege of Sidney Street .
