James "Jim" Broadbent (born May 24, 1949 in Lincoln ) is a British actor and Oscar winner.

life and career

Broadbent was born in Lincoln to Doreen "Dee" and Roy Laverick Broadbent. His twin sister died in childbirth. His parents formed a regional drama group. Broadbent attended school in Reading and after college went to London, where he studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He was then a stage actor at the Royal National Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company , where he appeared in numerous plays in various roles. Today he is one of the most outstanding character actors in British theater.

Broadbent made his film debut in 1978 in a supporting role in the horror film The Death Scream . In the 1980s he gained increasing popularity as a film actor and has appeared in various films such as Time Bandits , The Hit and Brazil . In the 1990s, other film productions followed such as Life is Sweet , Enchanted April , A Fall for Borger and Topsy-Turvy - Upside Down . As a television actor, he has appeared in British productions such as Blackadder and Doctor Who .

Broadbent received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2001 for his role in the drama Iris . He played the husband of Iris Murdoch , played by Judi Dench . In 2008, he played the role of Dean Charles Stanforth in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull . In 2009 and 2011 he was in the Harry Potter films Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in the role of Professor Horace Slughorn . Broadbent received an honorary doctorate from Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln in 2016 in recognition of his acting achievements. In the summer of 2017, Broadbent was seen in the role of archmaester in the seventh season of the US series Game of Thrones .

Broadbent has been married to theater designer and illustrator Anastasia Lewis since 1987.

There is a small theater in his hometown, for the conversion of which his father provided the funds from a former Methodist chapel. Roy Laverick Broadbent died shortly after the theater opened, and in honor of him the theater was renamed "The Broadbent Theater".
