occupation

Little Voice is the film adaptation of the musical Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright . The London stage version was directed by Sam Mendes .

action

The film is set in Scarborough ( North Yorkshire / Northern England) in a poor, unemployed atmosphere. The main character is Laura, who speaks very little after the death of her father and engages in the singing of old records and is therefore called Little Voice or LV for short. The records come from her father's large record collection. By constantly singing the records, she develops the ability to imitate the voices of her favorite stars such as Judy Garland , Shirley Bassey , Marlene Dietrich or Marilyn Monroe .

The relationship with her mother Mari, who is addicted to alcohol and constantly brings new lovers into the house, is difficult. One of them is the singing talent scout and wannabe manager Ray Say, who discovers the daughter's talent while visiting Mari and thinks he can make it big with her. Mari, who no longer has much hope for a lasting love, desperately wants to bind Ray to her.

LV also falls in love with the silent and shy telephone repairman Billy. All together they are looking forward to the first and, according to LV, only appearance in a nightclub.

Reviews

“A sometimes quite crude film that lives from the convincing play of its main actors. The varied camera work subtly addresses the characters of the protagonists. The instinctive sensitivity of the film makes up for some dramaturgical platitudes. The instinctless German dubbed version takes away much of the film's positive charisma. "

Awards

Brenda Blethyn was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Role in 1999 for her portrayal of Mari Hoff , and Michael Caine received a Golden Globe for Best Leading Role in a Comedy for his portrayal of Ray Say .
