Paul Webster (film producer)

Paul Webster (born September 19, 1952 ) is a British film producer . He has worked both as an independent producer and for various production companies, overseeing well-known films such as Die Reise des Junge Che (2004) and Pride and Prejudice (2005).

Life

Webster started his professional career in an office near the Gate Cinema in London as a commercial clerk ("Despatch Clerk"). He spent 10 years in sales before moving to production in the mid-1980s. His first feature film Traumdämon - Dream Demon (1988) by Palace Pictures was followed by a five-year collaboration with Working Title Films , in which he produced five films and set up and directed their Los Angeles office. He then went on to produce films for US audiences as an independent film producer, including the critically acclaimed Little Odessa (1994), The Chance Over (1996) and The Yards (2000).

Between 1995 and 1997 he was Head of Production for Miramax Films , where he directed several films, including The English Patient (1996), Good Will Hunting (1997) and Shakespeare in Love (1998). In 1998 he went to Channel 4 to start the freely available digital broadcaster Film4 . In its five-year existence, the station has been involved in the production of several short films and over 50 films, including East is East (1999), Sexy Beast (2000), Jump Tomorrow - Spring Morgen (2001), Sturz ins Leere (2003) and Die Young Che's Journey (2004). The productions supported by the broadcaster received over 100 international awards and six Oscar nominations.

In 2004, Webster co-founded Kudos Pictures, the motion picture division of Kudos Film and Television , with Stephen Garrett and Jane Featherstone . That same year he produced Pride and Prejudice for Working Title, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen . Atonement followed in 2007, which was very successful worldwide, received good reviews and six Academy Award nominations , including for Best Picture . The film was also nominated for the Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy Film Awards , and each received the award for Best Picture . This was followed by Kudos Pictures' first production, Deadly Promises - Eastern Promises , directed by David Cronenberg , which was nominated for a BAFTA and a Genie Award for Best Picture . This was followed by Miss Pettigrew's Big Day (2008) and the documentary The Secret of the Flamingos (2008) about the Lesser Flamingos by Disneynature , an independent film label of the Walt Disney Company .
