action

The film is set in England during the Second World War and then most of the time in France . Charlotte Gray is a young woman from St. Andrews, Scotland who is invited by a fellow traveler to publish his book on her train ride to London. There she meets a young flight officer, with whom she falls in love, and is also recruited into military service by the host. When she learns that her lover stayed in France in a plane crash , she decides to have herself deployed in the country. After completing the relevant training, she finally gets her first job. She is supposed to parachute over a small village and give a contact person two spare tubes for a radio.

But this assignment fails, the contact person is caught and Charlotte narrowly escapes arrest. She seeks advice from the Resistance fighter Julien, who unceremoniously hides her in his father's old country house. Charlotte has to hide here for a while now. Julien visits her every few days. It is a terrible time in France, the Jews are being transported away by car, and everyone who cannot prove that they are French, too. Julien has to go into hiding and leaves Charlotte with a heavy heart. After the war is over, Charlotte, who has since fled to England , returns to France, where she meets Julien again.

criticism

  • film-dienst 26/2002: Sensitively staged, the diversified film impresses with its brilliant camera work and rapid editing. The difficult balance between self-discovery melodrama, war drama and romance succeeds almost completely.
