Gillian Armstrong
Gillian May Armstrong (born December 18, 1950 in Melbourne ) is an Australian film director .
life and work
Armstrong trained in stage and costume design at Swinburne College and studied film at the Australian Film and Television School in Sydney. She worked as a production assistant, film editor and assistant director . In 1970 she began making shorts and documentaries .
Her first full-length feature film, My Brilliant Career , was made in Australia in 1979, starring the then unknown Judy Davis in the lead role. As in other Armstrong films, a woman is portrayed here who does not want to be restricted by strict social norms. The film won numerous awards. From 1984 Armstrong filmed both in the USA and in her native Australia. In the 1990s there was a focus on literary film adaptations.
