action
The action takes place in 1901. Kate Soffel is the shy wife of the strict and unemotional prison director of the Allegheny County Prisons in Pittsburgh. They have four children together. After months of being bedridden and without the attending physician being able to determine the cause of her suffering, Ms. Soffel suddenly gets back on her feet. To get out of her lethargy, Kate decides to visit inmates and read to them from the Bible. She meets Ed Biddle and his brother Jack, who are sentenced to death for murder. Wrong, as Kate thinks.
She falls head over heels in love with Ed and helps him and his brother break out by smuggling escape tools into jail. Together they flee - with fatal consequences. The public is divided into supporters and enemies of the refugees.
Reviews
“Ambitious drama with Bonnie & Clyde echoes and high show values from the fate of women specialist Gillian Armstrong (Betty and her sisters) . In the story based on a true story, Diane Keaton dares to break out of her petty bourgeois existence under the influence of the charm of Mel Gibson, which is visually underlined by the change from gloomy, dirty Pittsburgh to the gleaming, sunny snowy landscape. Matthew Modine can be seen in a supporting role as Gibson's brother. "
Remarks
Heather Graham made her acting debut in the role as a factory worker. Her name did not appear in the credits.
