Ron Nyswaner (* 5. October 1956 in Clarksville , Pennsylvania , as Ronald L. Nyswaner ) is an American screenwriter and film director .

biography

Ron Nyswaner wrote his first screenplay for the Susan Seidelman film New York City Girl in 1982 . After writing the scripts for the films Escape for three with Mel Gibson and Swing Shift - Love for a Time with Goldie Hawn , he made his directorial debut in 1988 with The Prince of Pennsylvania (leading roles: Keanu Reeves and Fred Ward ).

Nyswaner, who is open about his homosexuality and actively advocates the rights of homosexuals, often directs films that address the issues of homosexuality, homophobia and AIDS . Examples are the documentary The Celluloid Closet and the television drama Soldier's Girl , a true story about the gay soldier Barry Winchell and his murder by his comrades in 1999.

In 1993 Nyswaner attracted worldwide attention with his script for Jonathan Demme's AIDS drama Philadelphia . He has received nominations for the Oscar , the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA Award .

After working for television for several years, he wrote the screenplay for the movie The Colorful Veil in 2006 , which is based on the novel The Painted Veil by William Somerset Maugham . For this he received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards and the Prize of the National Board of Review .

In 2004 he published his autobiography Blue Days, Black Nights: A Memoir (Advocate Books ISBN 1-55583-889-8 ), in which he describes his relationship with alcohol, drugs and hookers.
