Susan Seidelman (born December 11, 1952 in Philadelphia ) is an American film director .

Life

Seidelman studied art and fashion at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She had her first success in 1976 with her short film And You Act Like One Too , which was nominated for a Student Academy Award . Her first feature film was New York City Girl in 1982 , which was shown in the competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1982 . Her second feature film Susan ... desperately wanted was a great commercial success . Here Madonna , who had just made her breakthrough as a pop star , played her first leading role. For The Flemish Master , in which Mira Sorvino made one of her first film appearances, Seidelman received an Oscar nomination in 1994 in the category Best Short Film . Seidelman has mostly worked for television since the 1990s . Among other things, she directed the pilot for the cult series Sex and the City . Her television film Ice Age - A Marital War with Consequences from 1999 has been nominated for numerous film awards, including two Emmys .
