Ray Donovan is an American television series starring Liev Schreiber . It is produced by The Mark Gordon Company for Showtime TV . The series is about Ray Donovan, who deals with the problems of the Los Angeles elite and tries to solve them in the best possible way. However, he only succeeds in doing this with his clients ' problems , not his own.

The series started on June 30, 2013 on Showtime and became the best series start in the station's history to date. On December 20, 2018, the production of a seventh season was announced, the first episode of which aired on November 17, 2019.

In February 2020, Showtime discontinued the series after seven seasons. Leading actor Liev Schreiber was nevertheless hopeful about another sequel.

action

The brothers Raymond, Terry and Bunchy Donovan come from a dysfunctional family who lived in South Boston ( Southie ). They grew up in a criminal environment and experienced sexual abuse by Catholic priests. Her father was arrested after a robbery and sentenced to a long prison term. Her sister committed suicide while the mother was dying of cancer.

The series begins two decades later. The three Donovans now live in the Los Angeles area . Raymond "Ray" is married to Abby, has a son and a daughter, and lives in a house in high-priced Calabasas . He works as a fixer for Goldman & Drexler, a law firm that represents the rich and famous of Los Angeles. Ray's job is to take care of their problems discreetly, which he solves professionally and often with illegal methods at high pay. Terry, a former boxer with Parkinson's disease, runs a boxing club in Los Angeles with the help of the sexually impaired Bunchy, which Ray also uses for money laundering.

Donovan's lives are in turmoil when their once threatening father, Mickey Donovan, is paroled from prison. Mickey introduces his three sons to the still unknown half-brother Darryl. While Mickey seeks revenge on the priest who molested his sons, Ray wants Mickey to return to prison while the FBI investigates Ray's employer.

reception

Axel Schmitt from Serienjunkies.de wrote that "Showtime [...] with Ray Donovan [delivers] a solid drama product, which, however, has to put up with some questions about logic, linearity and realism in the opening episode". In part, the series "on the dramaturgical side [the] character drawing and figure constellation as well as on the technical side also the image composition reminds of the model of all modern drama series The Sopranos ".

At the 2013 Critics' Choice Television Awards , the series was recognized in the Most Promising New Series category, along with five other series . Jon Voight won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or TV Movie for his portrayal of Mickey Donovan .
