Susan Sarandon
Susan Sarandon Abigail (* 4. October 1946 in New York City as Susan Abigail Tomalin) is an American actress . She won an Oscar in 1996 for her portrayal of Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking .
Life
Susan Sarandon was born the eldest of nine children of a strictly Catholic family of Italian - Welsh descent. Sarandon's father Philip Tomalin was also active in show business as a singer in a big band. “I was forbidden to sing because I didn't have a beautiful voice. This created a music phobia in me, ”Sarandon told the Guardian .
After completing school, she enrolled at the Catholic University in Washington, DC and took a. a. the subjects of acting, English and military strategy. She earned the money for her studies through jobs as a secretary, cleaning lady and model. Actually, she didn't care much for acting, but in 1964 she took part in a theater performance. She met Chris Sarandon , who eventually brought her to acting. The two married in 1967. “I married Chris, the first man I ever slept with. I was convinced he knew everything, ”Sarandon said in an interview with The Guardian in March 2006.
Through her husband, Sarandon came to film in 1970, and both were cast in the film Joe - Revenge for America (directed by John G. Avildsen , with Peter Boyle ). Chris failed, and she was cast for a leading role. She then shot small parts for television while still studying in Washington, D.C. In 1975 she starred alongside Robert Redford in Reckless Fliers and she had her first major hit with the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show , in which she played Janet Weiss . In the drama Pretty Baby (by Louis Malle ) she convinced as the mother of a prostitute (played by Brooke Shields ). Shortly thereafter, she worked again with Louis Malle for Atlantic City, USA - and she was nominated for an Oscar for her role as waitress . The two also got closer in private. In 1979 she divorced Chris Sarandon . In 1983 she starred alongside Catherine Deneuve in the horror film Desire , before her career break through starring alongside Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer in The Witches of Eastwick .
In her next film project Annie's Men , she met Tim Robbins in 1988 and began a relationship with him. Your involvement in the project came about at the instigation of Kevin Costner , so Sarandon in an interview with the London Guardian. “The producers didn't want to cast Tim or me for the film. We owe it to Kevin that we got the roles. He stood up for us and did not give up. "
In 1991, Sarandon appeared with Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise . She was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of a waitress turned criminal. Other engagements
In 1999 she protested against "racist search methods" used by the New York police . The occasion was the death of Amadou Diallo , who was shot by a special unit. In the 2016 US presidential election, she made public her support for Senator Bernie Sanders . In the course of the 2016 presidential election in the United States , she supported the Green Party candidate Jill Stein .
She has been campaigning for cannabis legalization for years .
