action

Australian actor Errol Flynn rose to the top ranks of Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. He was not only known for his adventure and pirate films and in particular for his role as Robin Hood in the movie Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds , but also developed a reputation as a film star as a daredevil, bon vivant and womanizer. The film deals with Errol Flynn's final years before his death in 1959.

At this time, alcohol and other drugs shape his life, his health suffers from this persistent condition. He meets Beverly Aadland , a young woman who pretended to be of legal age by means of a forged birth certificate in order to be able to work as an actress in the Warner Brothers Studios . Beverly receives intensive support in her work from her mother Florence Aadland. After the first meeting of Errol Flynn and Beverly Aadland, an affair quickly ensues between the two. While Beverly's mother approves of this with regard to her daughter's career and forces the liaison, the relationship is picked up and questioned by the press and public after a short time. The relationship between the two is extremely controversial, particularly due to Beverly's young age, the huge age gap, and Flynn's dubious reputation. Errol Flynn had a heart attack in October 1959 and died a short time later in the presence of Beverly Aadland.

Reviews

Cinema is unflattering about Kevin Kline's acting performance :

“With the role of the incorrigible, aging playboy, who died in the arms of a very young girl in 1959, he should have been more choosy. With Susan Sarandon as the ambitious mother of the moderately gifted Beverly (Dakota Fanning), he has a brisk counterpart, but the script, story and style only spread muted boredom, and Hollywood insights are rare. "

However, Kino.de's verdict on the protagonists and the film itself is more positive :

“This sometimes touching, but often cheerful drama tells of the last great love of the film star Errol Flynn, and on this occasion gives the inclined viewer an insightful look behind the scenes of Hollywood in its heyday. Kevin Kline fits the role of Flynn like a glove, Susan Sarandon convinces as an ambitious career mother, but the show steals Dakota Fanning as the underage lover of the aging playboy. "
