Richard Glatzer

Richard Glatzer (born January 28, 1952 in Queens , New York City , New York , † March 10, 2015 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American director , screenwriter and film producer . He became known through films such as The Fluffer , Echo Park LA or Still Alice - My Life Without Yesterday .

life and career

Richard Glatzer, born in Flushing , Queens , in 1952 , grew up in Westbury on Long Island and in Livingston, New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and later received his PhD in English from the University of Virginia . He then taught screenwriting for a while at the New School and the School of Visual Arts in New York.

In the 1980s he moved to Los Angeles, where he initially worked as a screenwriter for series such as Junge Schicksale and Maxie's World . In 1993 he directed the comedy Grief for the first time, for which he had also written the script. With his future husband, the director Wash Westmoreland , he made films such as The Fluffer and Echo Park LA in the 2000s , for which he and Westmoreland won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival .

In 2011, the doctors diagnosed him with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Regardless of the progression of the disease, Glatzer worked with his husband on other film projects such as the independent film about the actor Errol Flynn My Life with Robin Hood with Dakota Fanning , Susan Sarandon and Kevin Kline or the Alzheimer's drama Still Alice - My Life Without Yesterday with Julianne Moore in the lead role, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2015 for her portrayal .

Glatzer, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person, died on March 10, 2015 at the age of 63 in Los Angeles, California.

Westmoreland plans to film the script he wrote with his husband about the writer Colette in May 2016 with Keira Knightley in the lead role.

In addition to his career as a director and screenwriter, he also worked as a film and television producer, including for the American series America's Next Top Model .
