Hannah Dakota Fanning (born February 23, 1994 in Conyers , Georgia ) is an American actress , model and voice actress .

Private life

Fanning is the eldest daughter of Heather Joy (nee Arrington) and Steve J. Fanning. She has German , Irish , English and French roots. Actress Elle Fanning is her younger sister. The family moved to Los Angeles when Dakota was five years old.

As a toddler , Fanning was introduced to an artist agency by her parents . As a five year old, she was hired for a commercial . She appeared in various television series such as Ally McBeal , Emergency Room , Friends and CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators . In 2001, Fanning made her breakthrough with a leading role in the drama I Am Sam alongside Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer . Fanning was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance as the youngest actress to date .

In 2002 Fanning had a leading role in all ten episodes of the science fiction series Taken produced by Steven Spielberg ; initially as a narrator, in the second half also as an actress. Fanning's facial and vocal expressiveness made her one of the most sought-after child actors in Hollywood .

In 2004, Fanning starred in Tony Scott's action film Man Under Fire, alongside Denzel Washington , who played her bodyguard . In 2005 Fanning delivered a challenging acting duel with Robert De Niro as her film father in the psychological thriller with horror elements Hide and Seek , which was practically a two-person play . In the same year, Fanning fought her way through the apocalyptic blockbuster War of the Worlds alongside her film father Tom Cruise and starred with Kurt Russell in the more family-friendly equestrian film Dreamer . Russell was very enthusiastic about Fanning's acting skills and attested her to be "the best actress he has ever worked with."

In addition to appearances as an actress, Fanning is also active as a voice actor for animation films, for example in the sequel to the Disney production Lilo & Stitch (2005) and as older sister Satsuki in the English version (2005) of My Neighbor Totoro (1988) by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki , in which Fanning's sister Elle Fanning was four years younger than Mei .

In Hounddog (2007) Fanning played a brutal rape scene that was not only criticized in the USA. Her parents in particular, who gave their consent to the filming, were heavily attacked in public. Fanning himself didn't understand the excitement, however, and said, "People should prepare their children for the world out there, it's not all rosy!" And "It didn't really happen, it's a movie and it's called acting!" In 2008 Fanning was offered the role of cancer patient Kate Fitzgerald in The Life of My Sister at the side of Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin . However, since she allegedly refused to appear bald, Sofia Vassilieva eventually took over the role .

Fanning played the role of Jane in New Moon in 2009 and in 2010 in the sequel Eclipse . Also in 2010, Fanning starred in the biographical film The Runaways about the band of the same name as the musician Cherie Currie . Musically, she was previously active as the singer of a song on the soundtrack of the pig Wilbur and his friends . She sings several songs on the runaways soundtrack .

In 2018, Fanning took on the female lead in the crime series The Alienist - Die Einkreisung . In 2019 she played the role of Lynette Fromme , a member of the Manson Family, in Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood .

Awards

From 2002 to 2010, with the exception of 2008, Fanning was nominated for the Young Artist Award in different categories every year . She was able to win this award three times.

In addition to the Young Artist Award, Fanning was nominated for various prizes by numerous other organizations. Among other things, she won the BFCA Award for Best Young Actress in 2002 for Ich bin Sam and in 2006 for War of the Worlds . She was also voted Most Popular Actress in the 2007 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards .
