action

Molly Gunn, daughter of former rock legend Tommy Gunn, has had a carefree life since her parents were killed in a plane crash. Shortly after her 22nd birthday, however, she learns that her father's asset manager has brought through her entire inheritance and that she is now completely penniless. Because of her childishly naive idea of life, she does not take her predicament very seriously at first. Molly messes up her first job in a luxury boutique, which she owes only to her friend Ingrid, after a few days.

Molly meets aspiring musician Neal at a party and falls in love with him. As with other men before, she quickly tires of him. But when Neal breaks up with her and thus anticipates her, she realizes that he means more to her than she thought. She tries to win him back, but only pushes him further away from her. In addition, Molly is finally overtaken by the harsh reality when her property manager throws her out of her apartment because of unpaid bills. She temporarily stays with her friend Ingrid and takes a new job as a nanny for the music producer Roma Schleine in order to look after her eight-year-old daughter Ray in the future. Ray is neglected by her mother and has pissed off countless nannies over the years. Ray's father is in a coma and is being looked after by a private nurse at home. Ray is cheeky, precocious, overcontrolled and has a full-blown hygiene freak that annoys everyone around her. She is unable to express her feelings and does not allow herself to do anything appropriate to her age. Ray's greatest passion is ballet and Mikhail Baryshnikov is her absolute role model, whom she often quotes. Molly tries to lure Ray out of the reserve by showing her what it's like to have fun - which is why the two of them clashed for a while. But ultimately it strengthens their friendship and both can learn a lot from each other.

Meanwhile, Neal signs a record deal with Schleine Records, Roma's company, and goes missing Molly. When they meet and Molly gives him back his lucky jacket, which he once left with her, he is horrified: Molly has meanwhile redesigned it after she accidentally burned parts of her. Angry about it, Neal wants nothing more to do with Molly. Shortly thereafter, Molly gets into an argument with Ingrid and is thrown out of her apartment, whereupon she moves in with Huey.

After Molly missed a ballet performance by Ray, she wants to make amends and takes her to the amusement park on Coney Island . Molly tells Ray how she fled there after the death of her parents and rode the teacup carousel there until she vomited. When the two get there, however, the season has not yet started and the rides are closed. Ray is visibly disappointed, but doesn't really want to show Molly. Molly later explains to Ray that, statistically, coma patients would do much better if their loved ones talked to them. Ray believes her and speaks to her comatose father. The next day, however, he dies and Molly is fired because Ray no longer wants to see her.

Neal appears again at Molly's. He has realized that he has also made mistakes in the relationship and wants to be with her again, but Molly lets him down. After tearing up her last Roma paycheck, Molly has to sell her father's entire guitar collection. She earns US $ 75,000 in revenue and can now afford her own small apartment. Shortly thereafter, Molly learns that Ray has disappeared. She finds the completely desperate girl at the teacup carousel on Coney Island. They drive it until Ray has to throw up and finally make up again, but Molly no longer wants to work for the Schleines.

At the memorial service for Ray's father, which was attended by numerous celebrities, Molly is approached by the musicians Dave Navarro and Mark McGrath , the singer of the Sugar Ray group , who commission her to design her clothes after they have designed the jacket she has created Have seen Neals in one of his videos. She realizes that she has a talent for fashion design and then applies to a fashion school.

Molly creates a tutu for Ray's end-of-year performance. When she shows up there, she is surprised that Ray is dancing freestyle, although she used to loathe it. Neal sings the song "Molly Smiles", which Molly's father once wrote for her, as musical accompaniment. He plays one of Tommy Gunn's guitars while the ballerinas use the other guitars from Molly's auctioned collection as props. Thus it becomes clear that Schleines bought Molly's guitar collection at the auction.

Reviews

“The comedy varies the“ King Thrushbeard ”motif in a simple way, without arousing any sympathy for the exaggerated characters. The pathetic happy ending destroys the last serious approaches. "
