Mikhail Baryshnikov Nikolayevich ( Russian Михаил Николаевич Барышников , transcription Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov . Scientific transliteration Mihail Nikolaevich Baryšnikov *  27. January 1948 in Riga , Latvian SSR , USSR ) is a Latvian - American Ballet Dancers, choreographers and actors .

Life

Mikhail Baryschnikow grew up as the son of Russian parents in Riga . There he also took his first ballet lessons. He has a half-brother from his mother's first marriage to a soldier who died in World War II. His mother, who had always encouraged his interest in ballet and opera , committed suicide when Baryshnikov was twelve years old. The relationship with his father, who was a colonel in the Soviet Army , remained rather distant throughout his life.

At fifteen, thanks to his talent, he was admitted to the Vaganova Academy in Leningrad and tutored by Alexander Pushkin . Three years later he became the principal dancer of the Kirov Ballet . In 1974 he left while touring Canada and applied for political asylum in the United States. In the following years he danced with various ballet companies .

From 1979 to 1980 he was a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet . From 1980 to 1989 he was Artistic Director of the American Ballet Theater . In 1984 he became a US citizen. In 1999 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1990 to 2002 he worked for the White Oak Dance Project , of which he was a co-founder. In addition to his work in ballet, he has taken on roles in Broadway shows and films. Since 2005 he has been artistic director of the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York.

In 1981 his relationship with actress Jessica Lange gave birth to his daughter Shura Baryshnikov , who also became a dancer. From his longstanding relationship with the dancer and journalist Lisa Rinehart , he has a son and two daughters, including the actress Anna Baryshnikov .

In 1977, his first film At Turning Point received an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role . In 1985, he starred with Gregory Hines and Isabella Rossellini a starring role in White Nights - The night of the decision . In it he plays a ballet dancer who has fled to the West and who is to be persuaded to return to the Kirov Ballet .

In the film Company Business he plays a KGB agent in the United States alongside Gene Hackman .

In the final season of the television series Sex and the City , he appeared regularly as Carrie Bradshaw's friend Aleksandr Petrovsky . He also had a short guest appearance in the video for Barbra Streisand's song Emotion .
