Gregory Oliver Hines (born February 14, 1946 in New York City , New York - † August 9, 2003 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American tap dancer , actor and singer .

Life

Maurice Robert Hines, Gregory's father, was a dancer, actor and drummer; his mother was Alma Hines. The boy had tap dance lessons at the age of three, and at the age of five he started making money on the streets of Harlem . When he was six he danced with his brother Maurice at the Apollo Theater on 125th Street. Her father accompanied her on the drums of a swing band . Together with his brother, Hines has appeared in many dance shows on Broadway .

In the 1980s, Hines performed as a solo dancer. With his powerful, down-to-earth style and the integration of Afro-Cuban dance elements, he helped tap dance gain new popularity in various tap dance films. Hines was an important link between veterans of tap dancing and the younger generation, as well as between black and white tap dancers. In 1997 he was the title character of the comedy show The Gregory Hines Show on the American television channel CBS , in which he played a single father looking for a bride. In 2001, he played the legendary tap dancer Bill Robinson in the TV movie Bojangles .

Gregory Hines died of liver cancer in Los Angeles on August 9, 2003, at the age of 57 . At the time of his death, he was engaged to bodybuilder Negrita Jayde. In addition to her, he left two ex-wives, Patricia Panella, with whom he had a child, and Pamela Koslow, with whom he had two children.

In 2004, Hines was posthumously inducted into the International Tap Dance Hall of Fame .
