Tap Dance is an American feature film from 1989 .
action
Max Washington is a thief who spent two years in prison. He is the son of a great master of tap dance and is also highly talented himself. However, he took a different path in life than his father in order to get money faster. On parole in freedom, he takes a job washing dishes in a restaurant. He visits his late father's dance studio, where his close associate Little Mo lives with daughter Amy (formerly Max's great love) and their teenage son Louis. Mo has big plans and hopes for Max's help. However, the money is closer to Max than the dance. He rejoins the old pals who are planning a new coup. Amy tries everything to stop Max from stealing more. She is responsible for casting dancers in a Broadway show and persuades Max to start as a dancer there. The director has the last word, however, and he is jealous of Amy and Max. Although Max is considerably better than other dancers, he does not get the engagement.
After this unsuccessful attempt to return to dance, Max no longer wants to dance at all. Little Mo does not give up, however, to persuade Max to do a rehearsal with him. He should take care of Broadway shows and musicals - tap dancing would be his life. Nevertheless, Max carries out a break-in with his buddies in which they steal jewelry. The break-in succeeds, but on the run, the dripping of water from a pipe reminds Max of the rhythm of the tap dance. He finally becomes aware of what his true purpose in life is. He puts the jewels back in the safe and comes to Little Mo the next morning to try them out.
background
The film brings the legends of tap dancing together in one film. In addition to Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr., the tap dance veterans Sandman Sims , Bunny Briggs , Harold Nicholas , Arthur Duncan , Pat Rico and Steve Condos will perform . Even the then 16-year-old Savion Glover in the role of Amy's son is one of the best tap dancers in America today . He later appeared at the graduation ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and at Barbra Streisand's Millennium New Year's Eve Show as Master Time in Las Vegas . For Sammy Davis Jr., who fell ill with throat cancer six months after the film premiere , it was his last movie.
Reviews
Heyne-Filmjahrbuch: “Ingenious choreography by Henry Le-Tang and an excellent cast. Rousing: Sammy Davis, Jr. as the legendary tap veteran and Gregory Hines, who plays Max in a spirited, sensitive and nuanced manner. "
