Jessica Phyllis Lange (born April 20, 1949 in Cloquet , Minnesota ) is an American actress . She has enjoyed great success in film, television and theater since 1976 and is one of the most awarded actresses of modern times. Among other things, she is a two-time Oscar winner, received five Golden Globe , three Emmy and one Tony Award .

life and career

Lange studied at the University of Minnesota before going to Paris to learn the art of acting. In 1973 she came back to the USA . Three years later she made her acting debut in Dino De Laurentiis ' film King Kong and was immediately awarded the Golden Globe for Best Young Actress. In 1983 she was nominated twice for an Oscar , one for Frances with Sam Shepard and the other for Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman , for which she was awarded the prize. She was nominated three more times. So for Country (nominated 1985), Sweet Dreams (nominated 1986) and Music Box - The Whole Truth (nominated 1990), until she received her second Oscar for Operation Blue Sky in 1995 . In 1992 Jessica Lange made her Broadway debut opposite Alec Baldwin in Tennessee Williams ' A Streetcar Named Desire .

From 2011 to 2015 she was in American Horror Story , making her first appearance in a television series. According to her own admission, she had already had offers for series, but did not want to commit herself for too long. The rather low number of episodes in the series was the decisive factor for her to venture into the horror genre in this form. For her performance she has received numerous awards, including a Emmy in 2012 and 2014. 2016 Lange won for her portrayal of drug-addicted Mary Tyrone in the Broadway -Revival of Eugene O'Neill's play Long Day's Journey Into Night , respectively the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for best actress.

Jessica Lange dated the writer, director and actor Sam Shepard from 1982 to 2010 . The relationship resulted in two children. From her previous relationship with the dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov , the daughter Shura Baryshnikov emerged, who also became a dancer.
