Golden Globe Awards 2009
The 2009 Golden Globe Awards were presented for the 66th time on January 11, 2009 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), an association of international film journalists. The awards ceremony in the areas of film (14 categories) and television (11 categories) took place at a gala dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and was broadcast on NBC .
The nominations were also announced at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on December 11, 2008. The six-time Golden Globe winner Steven Spielberg was named the winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Award last year . He received the honorary award for his "extraordinary contribution to entertainment". Since the ceremony was canceled in 2008 because of the strike of the screenwriters organized in the WGA , the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille Awards had been postponed to 2009.
Nominations
The nominations in the 25 categories were announced on December 11, 2008 by HFPA President Jorge Camara, along with actors Elizabeth Banks , Terrence Howard and Rainn Wilson .
Films and television programs that were shown between January 1 and December 31, 2008 were taken into account. Foreign language films had to have premiered in the country of origin between November 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008. A total of 184 feature films (including 71 comedies or musicals), 8 animated films, 109 television series (including 42 comedies) and 38 mini-series or television films qualified.
The dramas The Strange Fall of Benjamin Button , Faith Question and Frost / Nixon received most of the nominations with five nominations each. However, none of these films could live up to their role as favorites and all productions received no awards. Danny Boyle's drama Slumdog Millionaire became the most successful film of the evening . The film focuses on a young Indian (played by Dev Patel ) from the slums of Mumbai . He gets the chance to be a candidate in the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to occur. Boyle's film turned all four of its nominations into victories, winning the trophies for best drama, director, screenplay, and best score. Darren Aronofsky's Golden Lion winner The Wrestler , who won the prizes in the categories of Best Actor in a Drama ( Mickey Rourke ) and Best Film Song , came with two wins . In the comedy category, Woody Allen's film Vicky Cristina Barcelona was one of the favorites with four nominations and was also awarded the prize for best comedy film. British actress Sally Hawkins ( Happy-Go-Lucky ) and Irish Colin Farrell ( Bruges see ... and die? ) Were best comedy actors .
Ahead of the ceremony several actors had ever received two nominations, but the Briton Kate Winslet could implement their double nomination in two victories. She won the HFPA award for both the lead role of April Wheeler in Sam Mendes ' drama Times of Riot , and the part of Hanna Schmitz in Stephen Daldry's The Reader . The British Tom Wilkinson received the award for his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in the television multipartist John Adams - Freedom for America , while he had to give way to the American Paul Giamatti ( John Adams - Freedom for America ) for his leading role in the television film Recount . Unprämiert remained Meryl Streep ( Doubt and Mamma Mia! ) And Ralph Fiennes ( The Duchess and Bernard and Doris ). The Australian Heath Ledger , who died in January 2008 , posthumously won the award for best supporting actor in The Dark Knight , which the film's director Christopher Nolan accepted on his behalf. For his performance as the Joker Ledger had already received several awards in the current American film award season.
In the foreign language films, the Israeli documentary Waltz with Bashir prevailed against the European film award winner Gomorrah - Journey to the Empire of Camorra from Italy and the German contribution Der Baader Meinhof Complex by Uli Edel . The Scandinavian film The Eternal Moments of Maria Larsson and the French drama So Many Years I Love You were also considered. A total of 53 foreign language films were submitted for the Golden Globe.
In the television sector, productions by the pay-TV broadcaster HBO had topped the list of favorites. The mini-series John Adams - Freedom for America was able to convert all of its 4 nominations into victories. The series 30 Rock received three awards .
